Yesterday I finally got around to picking up my first land rover. It's a 1999 TD5 110 County Station Wagon.
The car used to be owned by my old Explorer Scout Leader. He now has uses a minibus for all the scout activities, and a normal car for day-to-day stuff. This means that the poor old Landy (nicknamed Daisy by his children many years ago, a name I'm keeping out of respect!) has been rather neglected of late. It's done 180,000 miles, many of them towing, 12 up with a full roof rack, so it's had a hard life. It is however completely honest about it, no-one's tried to cover it in 6 inches of waxoyl! It has some rust - crossmember is dead, gearbox has a horrendous whine in 1st and 2nd, and really doesn't agree with downshifting into second! However I paid a good price and plan to get it back up to standard. Already done are a damn good wash, found all the leaks with the jet wash, and fitted an X-Eng pedal lock. Also removed the spare from the back door as it's knackered, and applied ACF-50 liberally all over the shop. I'll be documenting progress in here as I go, for now though, I'm very happy with my purchase, and haven't stopped grinning since yesterday! Here it is receiving it's first wash in a long time, bloke stood on the roof is my dad, who despite taking the mickey out of my taste in cars, has been a mechanic all his life and is quite looking forward to the project Click image to enlarge20151115_145311 (1) by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Last edited by miker on 14th Aug 2017 5:00pm. Hi Mike
Congratulations on joining the happy band that are Defender owners and i'm sure you'll enjoy it, the good and the bad. It sounds, and from what I can see, looks a fairly honest example and knowing the previous owner is both handy and a bonus. Good luck with it and keep us all posted Mark |

Bit of progress this evening. got the rear worklight back up an running, and fitted the power and mounting bracket for my GM380 (UHF radio). Photo also shows the X-Eng pedal lock, very happy with that! The token bit of sound deadening was put in as I had the flooring up, as I take panels off I will be deadening and reattaching trim more securely in an attempt to reduce rattles. Also been stripping out anything absorbent so that I can get it inside and properly dry!
20151118_011439 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr One niggle, clutch pedal doesn't return to the top of it's travel. Makes it feel like a very short press to release clutch, but if I lift up the pedal it moves relatively easily. Feels like the return spring is going slack? No fluid in the footwell, and the clutch pedal reservoir is nice and full. Last edited by miker on 14th Aug 2017 5:01pm. Edited 1 time in total |

You can put it on the bonnet if you don't want it on the roof. |

So aside from driving it fairly often, quite a bit of work has been going on with the old beasty. My Dad seems to have caught 'the bug' as bad, if not worse, than I have, and every time I go to do some work on it he pops up tools in hand seconds later, if not before me!!
Under the category of quick, cheap and easy, I've fitted some nice new flat blade wipers and LED interior bulbs. BIG improvement in visibility! I've also given it a more thorough clean top and bottom. The chassis is pretty clean, so once the drier weather comes around I'll be going at it with the dinitrol. I even got the machine polisher out and it does wonders for taking oxidation and rust stains off the paint, took 10 years off the old girl: Mid Wash Click image to enlarge20151205_105151 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Much Redder! 20151205_122724 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Click image to enlarge20151205_114417 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr I also took it up to ashcroft for a recon box with the 0.732 fifth. Cruising is now much quieter both due to the box not screaming and the engine not screaming! As I said at the start, the Rear Xmember was in a sorry state. I looked at genuine/britpart options, but the blacksheep option is both better and cheaper. Clive isn't doing fittings any more, so I got it delivered (UPS man was most displeased!) and took it to a friend of mine of mine who did a fantastic job. He also reports that the chassis legs are in very good condition too. Preparation: 20151220_130741 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Fitted! 20151224_155755 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr I was lucky enough to get a set of LED sidelights from Santa. They're now on and brighten it right up. Also aquired a set of Wipac crystals from a friend and fitted those, along with a pair of wipac 8" spots that came with the car to replace the rusty old LR ones. Ooh, and a pair of high back inward facing seats. Tomorrows job is to have a look at fitting those, throw some sound deadening down and take some decent photos!
