Nice areas of Dartmoor you went to miker, im not to far from them, love going up to Princetown across the moor from Tavistock and have an ice cream at the big park area and just look at the fantastic views

Yeah I love it on the moors, something about it just helps me relax. No views Saturday morning, I went across to Sheepstor to meet one of our groups, think I had 30yards of visibility! Breathtaking when it's clear though.

More progress! Decided to give her a new set of pads and discs and deal with my 60mph wobble.
The old pads were OK, but the discs were, ahh, let's call them lightweight racing discs! The wheel wobble was traced to a bearing with lots of play in it, so replaced the NSF wheel bearing as well. Also put fresh drive flanges on all round. Definitely less clunk in the driveline, needs new rear half shafts though. Currently debating 1 vs 2 piece half shafts. All went well, my Dad once again getting stuck in, his apprenticeship was in HGVs, never knew how much grease you could lose inside a wheel bearing race! Calipers, they didn't go so well. Couldn't get 2 pistons on each side pushed back satisfactorily, so bit the bullet and ordered new genuine calipers. ![]() Click image to enlarge20160424_133204 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Since painted black, we debated lamborghini yellow, but thought that would be a bit garish ![]() Also removed the roof rack. It's been on there for probably 15 years, so had to go at the clamps with plusgas, a mapp torch and then a few (lots) taps with a hammer to get them out! Plan is to clean up all the corrosion then when it goes back on it will go back on with some grease/duralac between the ally blocks and stainless clamps. ![]() Took it off for a few reasons: Ferry crossing to the IOW. Wanted to clean rack and roof. Might be putting some fresh paint on the roof, torn on colour though... I do like the look of black pack defenders ![]() ![]() I think it's a hannibal rack, can anyone confirm? Doesn't look quite like others I've seen, but then it is quite old. The adventure continues! Recent updates:
Passed it's MOT (yay!) Fitted a nice shiny straight thru stainless centre exhaust, at the same time as replacing the downpipe. Threw some weld at the rear door where it had cracked (much sturdier now!) Repaired the rear door lock. Now works with only the one key, and actually locks! Other than that, done some trailer towing and generally enjoyed it! |

Tip to get around the 'nice JEEP' thing are to tell these three jokes/quotes in quick succession:
LAND ROVER, proudly turning owners into mechanics since 1965! LAND ROVER, it's not leaking oil, it's marking its territory! LAND ROVER, if it's not leaking oil, it's because it doesn't have any! Emphasis is obvious ![]() Works on most and you usually get a laugh, the few that it doesn't I don't think will ever learn - I can tolerate it, I think they're just interested in other things ![]() |

It's been a busy year... 10-15k miles put on the defender, and mostly only routine maintenance needed!
Found a cider farm near salisbury.... ![]() Found a steep slope outside my flat, couldn't resist.... ![]() Click image to enlarge20170516_102037 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr ![]() Click image to enlarge20170516_102048 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Did some actual work, I work on live events, this cable reel holder has saved my my arms on several occasions now! ![]() Click image to enlargeIMG_20170715_105636 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Refoamed the drivers seat, fitted a cubby box and sound deadened the seat box ![]() Click image to enlargeIMG_20170801_180743 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Finally got round to rebuilding my safari door! The parts have been sitting in the garage for a year.... About halfway through we did question whether a new door may have been easier. However, with the added bracing this one is pretty sturdy! Pictured is my dad, as usual getting stuck in. ![]() Click image to enlargeIMG_20170811_101606 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr ![]() Click image to enlargeIMG_20170811_165216 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr ![]() Click image to enlargeIMG_20170812_135720 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr The chequer plate door card was something I had lying around, so it went on as the original door card died a death. ![]() Click image to enlargeIMG_20170812_143539 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr Painted in stone chip because A) It's resilient and B) I had some cans on the shelf and C) It's got a black door like an adventure edition now ![]() ![]() Click image to enlargeIMG_20170812_143552 by Mike Redgrave, on Flickr |

Miler, just read through your thread and it's great to read about the trials of defender ownership of another Scout leader

The DB Slider? Or the door? The slider came about when I snapped the rear leaf on the double axle trailer... twice... due to the nose height on the standard tow ball! |

For sure, with a bit of ingenuity (and some scrap steel) anything is possible!
