Both the Kaymar and the Alisport wheel carriers are two stage opening. Release and swing open the wheel carrier then release and open the door.

If seats are in the back where passengers enter via the rear door then these type of wheel carriers are illegal as rear passengers can not leave vehicle without assistance from outside.

Have to say that I'm not normally a fan of Britpart products but their wheel carrier works really well. Its been on for 15 months now without any trouble, no rattling at all and half the price of other "branded" carriers.

I've also just fitted the Britpart one after seeing it on a friends Defender (normally i wouldn't even consider Britpart). It actually looks pretty much the same as an older Mantec one on another friends defender (he thinks it an old Mantec one). Its only had 1 days laning as a test so far but seems OK, no rattles at all. I did smear some grease on the plastic piston to make it sound better when opening and closing however.

Hi Brendan,

I'd like to see your set up above as I'm looking for a rear wheel carrier but am also looking for a convenient place to put an radio aerial. At first I was thinking of replacing the factory antenna with the aerial as I don't listen to local programming anyways but now that I've read your solution, I think I'd like to go that way.

That for me was a deciding factor when procuring mine from both safety and convenience perspectives, especially where I no longer have the sliding windows.

for the britpart one - can't fault it - I think it cost around £120. Grease the piston once a year and no rattles.

I have the Mantec, fitted it a couple of months ago following the instructions in the article in LRO International magazine. I agree with the previous post that the trick is to really take time fitting it, line everything up then tighten. No squeaks or rattles and it works really well with the Nakatanenga gas strut. Very happy with it, I'd definitely fit the same again.

Kaymar has to be released from outside.. Thats the down side. If theres an accident in a SW your passenegers cant get out...

Very secure for off roading, but to open the rear door, you have to unlatch the carrier, swing it out of the way, then open the rear door. It is not connected to the door in any way.

Well, the SVX here passed its first "MOT" after 4 years without any remarks about the Kaymar. the 2nd "MOT" should be right now at the 7th year, but sofar no invitation received yet. Seems our testing service have a very substantial delay here, more than a year, and as long as they do not invite you to present your car you don't have to take any action. So we will see what they say next time, whenever that may be....
Worst case scenario, if they would fail the truck because of the Kaymar, I probably rather leave the Kaymar on, but remove and store the 2 seats in the rear. Those two seats in my case are more a hassle than a blessing, are never ever used and narrow the trunk space. Knowing very well the Mantec and Naka carriers, having read a lot about all others on here, I still think that the Kaymar is a very superior product, and I would hate to replace it by a different carrier.

Good point Eric but with three kids (two grown up) and usage of my rear seats being quite regular, safety was the prime overriding factor not legality. I for one cannot do without the rear seats and the rear door and carrier operating together with the rear door strut I fitted for 'controlled opening' is for me the ideal scenario, especially the little one having been knocked for 6 when parked on a slope previously.

Thought you didn't do chequer plate? (Joke by the way!)

Mal, the chequer plate was part of the Kaymar delivery if I remember well. And not just 2, but 3 mm at least, while for the price I think it should have been 5mm.

Now, quite interesting, I wrote that at 4 years the SVX with its 7 seats and with the Kaymar installed passed our "MOT" without any remarks. Here we get to a matter of different countries, different practices.....

I just checked, and seems that with 3rd row seats installed, there is no requirement here that passengers have to be able to open the door from the inside. However, taking out 1 or both of those 3rd row seats would mean a fail as on my car registration document is written that it is a 7-seater, and you then have to present the car as such with all seats, otherwise fair chance you don't pass the test.... So not going to do anything right now, leave everything as is.

As said, different countries, different practices. I do remember very well that when we moved long time ago from USA to Switzerland we brought our two USA cars with us as part of our household goods. One was a Grand Cherokee which in the USA does not come with a rear fog lamp. If we would have moved back to Belgium, I know for a fact that we would have had to install a rear fog light in order to be able to register the car there. Here in Switzerland a rear fog light was/is not a requirement.... Now, it obviously is never foggy here in Geneva.

Interesting about the rules on seats Eric. I can see the non-requirement with regards to the swing away on a 110 perhaps with the extra rear doors but what about on a 90 I wonder? I will ask next MOT time if he is aware of legalities regarding wheel carriers and the requirement for them to open with the door from the inside? I could look up on VOSA I suppose but my interest isn't that profound. Just a small curiosity.

Just like tools and tool boxes,there is so much generic items for sale out there,Its highly unlikely Britpart have their own exclusive suppliers for everything they sell.Which means Bearmach,Allmakes are no better....or worse. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

I think that Brendan has a clear opinion that in the UK 3rd row passengers have to be able to open the rear door from the inside. Frankly, I do find that quite understandable, actually a bit of a surprise that here they do not seem to care about that. But then again, in some EU countries like Belgium every car should have a fire extinguisher installed, which I also find a good requirement, but the Swiss again think different about that one too.
Most important, it looks like my Kaymar can stay put.
