Which type did you get? You can get Paper, Reinforced Paper and a metal one.

Hmm ... the metal one should do the job. I tried the paper and fibre jobs, all of which weeped a little. Put the metal one on, and whilst it weeped slightly to start with, after a few heat cycles, I nipped them up again and not had a drop since!

If possible check the return pipe is clear as sometimes you can get a build up of carbon in the pipe causing a bit of back pressure and leaking
also is the flange on the pipe flat |

Hi taazzukcb yeah I tried to see if it would tighten up some more but no, asked around to day about another metal gasket, I payed 58p another dealer wanted £2.50, so I'm starting to wonder if their is a quality difference, both faces are clean.

Clean , but are they flat , for metal gaskets they need to be 100% flat

Update: I had issues of the oil return pipe not sealing with the turbo, well, it was nothing to with the gaskets or whether the surfaces were flat, it was the turbo. The turbo bearing was starting to collapse, thus pressurising the the oil system causing the leak. Turbo rebuilt, and after 200 miles now all is good.

thanks for posting this, I have a suspicion this could be happening on my defender as well. Is there any checks that are easily done to test for it pressurising?

I don't know of any tests but someone may come along with an idea, the way I found out was a slight colour change in the aluiminium housing by the vanes which had become mat looking, the end float was still very minimal. Had the turbo checked by a specialist this confirmed my suspicions. You could check to see if any pressure is coming up through the dipstick tube. I had a little which has now gone.
