Well, if JLR will ever lauch another truck with that name it won't be an SVX, but an...... svx Whistle You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

If there's a new one & it has all the toys to make it the definitive final/celebration edition, then it should knock the socks off us all.

Seems odd or even lazy for LR to use a moniker, it's already used and so recently. If you can have a Spen King rangie, why not a Wilkes Brothers Defender?

Shortsighted to buy a diesel?

I wonder how many petrol vs diesel cars were sold in the UK last year? No chance of diesels being kept out of cities, maybe older DPF free ones but still don't see that.

I'll take a torquey, efficient diesel over a petrol any day, except in a performance car.

There are more & more diesels being sold in Aus.
Can't ever see them being banned anywhere.
What is the story on emissions, Petrol V Diesel?
Pickles.

Its not about emissions... its about particulate matter - or specifically black carbon or pm2.5

http://www.epa.gov/blackcarbon/basic.html

However DPFs can have a material effect in reducing that...

I think you will find we will see diesels banned in some city centres (not australia under Tony Abbott) within the next ten years... however it is most likely we will see more petrol electric hybrids with the electric motor providing the low down torque and the petrol the 'peak'

Special Vehicle Operations hot shop to modify Defender
So an SVR as well as an SVX is on the cards...

http://www.motoring.com.au/news/2015/prest...ming-50966

"McGovern confirmed his desire to see an Evoque SVR soon, and indeed more SVR models across the Land Rover product range – including the Defender – but he wouldn't be drawn on timing."

We started with this [Range Rover Sport SVR] but it'll work right through the Range Rover range, and through Discoverys and eventually Defenders.

SVO is not about offering better, it's about taking these vehicles and offering more choice. That can mean limited edition runs, to 150 units, down to one-off vehicles," he stated."

So maybe not the current version but possibly the new one.

Next Defenders will begin at a “very affordable” price point
Didn't think I'd heard this said before:

"Last month we spoke to Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern and he mentioned that the next Defenders will begin at a “very affordable” price point in a stripped-down, functional configuration. To us that sounds like competition for the new Jeep."

I have just been on the Defender manufacturing tour and it is really interesting, for all the obvious reasons. The guides know there stuff and mine made the point that the Defender in its current form is not cost effective to build. TBH having watched a load of people building bulkheads and seat boxs i could see his point. It is apparent that the guides have been briefed to really hammer this point home but also reassure the faithful that a new Defender will be delivered and be better than the current model!
What he also said was that LR want to sell 90/110/130s in America and they have to built using modern techniques to do this. He hinted that the use of an existing platform was the way forward, referencing the Disco 4, which if true would explain why you won't see mileage mules out and about. They played a video of a huge sand drawing on a beach of what was obviously a Defender shaped vehicle, hinting the new Defender looked like this and of course harking back to 1948 and the series 1 design.
There is also a wall that you post messages to detailing what you want from the new Defender. Most posts are the same, don't change it, retain the shape, the capability but stop the thing from leaking when it rains Smile
I left feeling that LR have got the message from the enthusiasts and know their audience. Only time will tell but i definitely felt they were going out of their way to offer reassurance.

Interesting regarding comment about using an existing platform.

When I did the heritage to our the guide did mention that before ford sold land rover to Tata that ford where quite a way through designing a defender replacement based on the t5 platform, but all the work stopped when the sale to Tata occurred. The t5 platform was so called because there was supposed to be 5 models coming from it (apologies if this is common knowledge, but I didn't know)

I really really hope that LR get the next defender right. Make it purposeful, reflect the original design but ultra modern in terms of engineering. Alas, I think that we defender lovers are in the minority. Land rovers are now mummy buses and for men who blow dry their hair. I also attended the Land Rover tour. The concensious was that the new disco and defender will share the same platform .

Chatted to a senior LR exec yesterday (won't say more) who is well acquainted the new Defender. Obviously they've signed an NDA so no explicit details. But I gleaned the following with some reading between the lines. Obviously can't treat this as 'fact', but thought I'd share.

1. Likely release Q1 2017
2. Discovery replacement comes first
3. Price is going to be much higher
4. Like other LR models will have a range of prices
5. Not aimed at the utility market
6. Won't resemble old model any more than new Mini resembles old Mini.
7. Design more angular (think Judge Dredd)
8. Will be fun vehicle, but not for the traditionalist

My takeaway from this is the value of current Defenders are fairly assured... 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack

^^ Sounds logical, would you have expected anything else from a car manufacturer in todays era?
Think after all these decades of using the Defender name which is embedded in people's minds as being the ultimate continuation of the traditional Land Rover model, JLR seriously should think of a new name too for the new model.
Better to keep the mythic Defender name alive as having belonged to a real mythic truck of which gazillions will stay on the road for decades to come, and not water that name down with a new Eurobox type of leasure truck which won't have anything much in common with the mecano type trucks they built for 67 years long.
I am frankly the longer the more happy that my bonnet still reads Land Rover. Whistle

A missed opportunity?
If the new discovery (5?) comes first then it kind of points to the new defender being built on whatever platform the new discovery uses. This is logical from an engineering point of view and probably points to the new defender and new discovery being ennigineered at the same time, and being mechanically closely related. Obviously given the more mass market appeal of a discovery replacement then that is the product that makes more sense to complete, sign off and bring to market first.

Will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for any odd looking discoveries on the road.

The most dismaying thing would be if the new model was accompanied by a massive price hike. This seems to be sadly increasingly likely if JLRs recent record is anything to go by, even at the lower end of their model range. For example the old FL2 started at around 25K at the end of its run, and the new Disco sport now starts at 31.5K!!!

A missed opportunity though? This is the noise coming from Mitsubishi regarding its next shogun...

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars...ader-roots

http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/2017-mitsu...ls/1315839

The defender replacement may end up being, in the eyes of many, actually a Shogun.

Looks like 2017 could see the release of two interesting 4x4s. Given the lack of details from JLR at present, and the more lifestyle orientated School run mum direction their brand is headed at present, I think I know where my money will be headed.....for the moment anyway!

it'll be a world market car. like the d4 / RR etc.

so i've bought another bulkhead and B pillars, that along with the chassis will be galvanised and then my 110 will see and my kids out.

Just always strikes me as incredibly odd that other manufacturers understand the importance of a proper utility vehicle to the brand, and to the bottom line, but LR, who helped create that market, is happy to give more and more of it away. With some of the messages from other manufactures, it seems like they are actually rejoicing. More opportunities for them!
