Just finished fitting Koni Heavy Tracks (supplied by Andrew at Deferderbits - Thanks Andrew ) to the rear axle.
I already fitted CSW springs in place of the USW springs to soften the ride (which it did...slightly). I'll be taking her for a spin later to see what difference has been made. I'm probably going to get some -1" rear springs with a slightly softer spring rate next, and after that, I may try a stiffer anti-roll-bar. However one step at a time, I'm keen to see what difference the Koni's make The Defender's in for it's first service on Friday...I wonder if the Warranty-Police will mention the modifications I've made... (there's been a few mods in her first year of life: bumperettes, shocks, check-temp, dinitrol, nakatenanga glove box, noisekiller etc) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Hmm... Quite a difference. Not much change at low speeds, but A-road bumps at 50mph or so are a significant improvement. If you have a USW, then CSW springs and Koni shocks to improve the ride somewhat, especially unladen - much less "choppy". I guess the 110 USW is the choppiest in the range (unladen) as the std springs are very firm (also fitted to 130's), and of course with less unladen weight than a CSW, it's quite harsh. As previous post, I'm not stopping here, I'm still looking for a better (unladen) ride, and will consider Koni Shocks to the front axle as well, and maybe 1" lower, softer springs on the rear, with an upraged ant-roll-bar. Some 90s come with HD as standard. I think my XS did. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender |

Just a word of warning about aftermarket shocks.

I recommend front Koni's as well, makes a huge difference and then add an uprated rear ARB.
i run my 90 with 28psi on the front which is in the workshop manual and not the 30 psi recommended in the driver handbook, that 2psi makes a big difference. after much playing around i now run the rear at 38 which is recommended for the 90 as i found any lower pressure with BFG ATs cause tyre side wall contra flex with the shocks and gave an unsettled ride. not sure what you need for your Defender though. since setting my 90 up as above the ride is great and the handling is fantastic. i also swapped out the front and rear ARB LR bushes for Super Pro's. Which Bilsteins B4 or B6? The B4 are replacement and the B6 are for off-road. There might be a difference in oil and gas fill.

A Google search says that B4 is OE spec twin tube damping - B6 is a higher spec replacement using 'monotube damping' - whatever that is !

I'm now running. 32 front and 34 rear psi on tyres. 38 is way to hard unless it's heavy towing.
Much better ride what ever shocks you have. |

Anyone had issues with the Koni rear bushes mine are starting to go after 6 month
