vdo temp reading on a Discovery 200tdi

Hi, I have fitted a vdo water temp sender and gauge to my defender which has a 200tdi Discovery engine in it.
The gauge reading after a run reads 50c, seems a bit low has anyone got a similar set up for me to compare please,thanks h

Far too low what sender did you use?? How long was the run and do you know if your thermostat is working ??

Got the sender and gauge as a pair, vdo.

Yes thought so not sure about the serviceability of the thermostat but I changed the gauge to get a more accurate reading as the gauge was getting close to the right hand side of the white block whilst travelling up hills.

Couple of things,
Take it for another run but longer than 10mins say 20 mins.
Make sure your heater controls are set to cold and the flaps work and the fan is off. I can drive for 10 - 15 mins and the coolant wont get warm if I have the heater and or the fan is on.

You can remove the stat and then look at it, it should be closed then put it in a container and pour boiling water over it and you should see it open. In your case if the thermostat is broken it will be stuck open

Thanks Dave, popped the thermostat housing off and hey presto...no thermostat

. I got a new one today and fitted just not had time to top up the coolant and test

Hi,
You could always take out a freshly boiled kettle, pop the sensor in it and the gauge should read close to 100C.
Sounds like you've sorted in now though.

Lol well its there for a reason !!!! Atleast you have found out the reason and have a nice easy fix.

Tested and holds steady Max temp 88c ...result
