When you say a bit slow, do you mean its revving up to 3000rpm and still not going fast enough?
If so, the disco transferbox / Ashcroft high ratio transfer gear will be a big benefit. I went the Ashcroft route last year and I think its possibly the best modification I did to the vehicle - 'cruising' at 70mph is now possible although its a bit of an effort to get there and maintain with the standard tune if I'm honest. A remap fixes that though At 70mph revs are now around 2500 - the td5 seems to run out of puff around 3000rpm I find - even with a remap. Last edited by Hufflepuff on 9th Sep 2015 9:22pm. My td5 with a stage 1 map from alive sits at 70 quite happily and will do 90 no problem, my old td5 which I had a disco box in sat at 80 happily with a stage 2 tune and pushed a ton 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

Definitely the best mod I've done, makes just enough difference to make it 'nice' to drive. The ratios are better for general driving as long as you don't do lots of towing, I've had a tune and done a few bits to mine to make it run better so the added power makes it even better, the two mods will go well together, I also get better fuel consumption than when it was std.
I did mine myself but I was lucky enough to live across the road from a mate who owned the local village garage, so I used his pit and gave him a shout when I needed a second pair of hands, as long as you get a good unit there shouldn't be any problems, you will need the seals for the shafts at both ends and some oil, but other than that it's not too difficult. Or you could take the easy option and get it done at Ashcrofts, or do an exchange for yours, but that will mean your without it for a few days. |

A transfer box straight from a Td5 disco, cost me £100 and I got £170 for mine!

No, just needed some seals, the handbrake etc all swap over, it's a heavy job but as long as you prepare and can get underneath then it's a diy job. Read up on the web there's lots of info.

Not without swapping over the selector housing etc. as it's different from Defender to Disco.
I believe Ashcroft do an adaptor piece to save swapping the actual shaft inside the box which makes it a much quicker job. |

I'd stick with a Defender box if possible then just change the transfer box from a disco. You need a 1.2 ratio transfer box, yours should be 1.4 as standard.

Just be aware that if you get a later Disco box it may not have a speedo output and may have a different flange on the front output. If that's the case you'll need to swap the rear output housing and the front output flange.Both are simple enough jobs though assuming the ones on your current transfer box are in good condition.

At this price I would do it tomorrow! What am I likely to pay through an LR Specialist? On investigation my transfer box is leaking at the front (not the rear output seal as I thought/hoped). If the box is coming off to remedy I'm considering looking for a Disco transfer box to switch in for the much talked about advantages. However, this was always planned way down the line. What am I looking at in terms of supply and fit cost wise - even just a steer would be appreciated! If it's coming off anyway it would make sense to do it now. I've barely managed anything I had planned as I'm still fault finding and remedying. The scenelight/rear work light keeps getting bounced down the list = frustrating. There's a few on eBay from £100 upwards, or £500 for a guaranteed recon, I think I was just lucky and fell on a good one. I guess if an indie was going to do it for you then they'd charge you a full days labour) plus the cost of the transfer box) so it'd probably be £300 ish + the box and seals etc.
