Took the bonnet off today to fix down the centre chequer plate panel with black pop rivets.

Photos of progress. Also took the opportunity to put some self adhesive sound deadening on the underside. Sorry they are not in order but doing this on an iPhone.

A bit of a tip for the drilling and riveting.

I lay the plate on the bonnet with a cloth underneath to stop it moving, centred it and then marked the holes with a centre punch just enough for me to see them once the plate was removed. Then I drilled a pilot with a 3mm drill, not all the way through but to hold the head of the larger drill and stop it skidding (some people use a piece of insulation tape).

Then I drilled the front set of holes with the 5mm drill and double checked my marks were all still correct when I placed the rivets into the holes.

The bonnet is double skinned so most holes have to be drilled through both layers to allow the rivet to sit flush. ( I guess you could get away with a shorter shank rivet)

Once all the holes were drilled I placed all the rivets through, ready for the final part. One or two just needed the drill passing through the plate and bonnet as the plate itself had a minor discrepancy in the pre drilled hole.

Then using my lazy tong rivet gun and with a piece or cardboard to protect paintwork from bouncing or slipping I slowly pulled the rivets. Each one took 5 strokes as they had a long shank. The lazy tong doesn't pop and bounce as much as hand held guns but I held it firmly in my left left right at the bonnet surface to ensure it didn't move.

No mishaps and all done. An easy job anyone can do, just take your time and don't rush. 2016 D4 HSE

Lovely looking 90 and great job on the bonnet chequer plate. What sound proofing is that underneath? Does it make much of a difference?

Great thread by the way.

Thanks for the compliment.

The sound proofing was some I had left over from doing my last TD5. I bought it on eBay to line the entire car. It's very thick, about 12mm, is self adhesive and has the silver heat reflective layer. I joined strips with aluminium tape to neaten it up. If you want to see that work you'll need to find my other defender thread in the My Defender section.

Every little bit helps with reducing panel resonance and boom, one piece alone won't make a huge difference. I used it cos I had it to hand. 2016 D4 HSE

Thanks for the link, seems cheap way of getting it a little bit quieter!

Mine is now soundproofed on the floor panels and bulkhead etc... So maybe time to continue the sound proofing journey!

Went to the LRO show today and had a small shopping list. The one thing I really wanted was the rear loadspace rubber mat but they are £115 and apparently don't quite fit the floor pan of a CSW with the seats removed.

So, plan B. I bought a roll of chequer plate design rubber mat and cut it to fit myself. Price was £30. Will work a treat.

Took a panoramic photo but it looks odd. It's better in the flesh. Very pleased. 2016 D4 HSE
