Sealing the Windscreen

Sorry if this is a blonde moment! but the LR water ingress booklet (thankd Dgardel ) gives the impression that you only have to seal the windscreen to frame side of the seal (red arrow )and not the windscreen to seal side (blue arrow)

What do folks do one here as there is not a lot of room to get the sealent into the windscreen side?

Whats the best product to seal the windscreen?Will any general purpose window sealent do or is there a particular product that is better than others ?

Also after it has rained is it normal when you open the doors water comes

out of the door seal near the bottom front edge of the door (I have a 90)

Hi

I am currently taking the opportunity to try and stem the water ingress on my 2004 110 SW. I have not yet tackled the windscreen (the fake hinges on the bulkhead were a major water leak source), I have used Sikaflex. Costs about 9 quid from Screwfix.

It is easy to apply, but very very messy, lots of rags needed, and a drop of white spirit to clean up.

I worked in the windscreen trade for many years...

It was very, very rare that anything was sealed glass to rubber, (it was rare to seal anything at all!), though rubber to body sealing is best. The glass to rubber seal is usually very good and never needs sealing.

what type/number of sikaflex did you use ?

2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey

A major leak source on my Puma was the spongy foam that runs horizontally between the bulk head and the windscreen. So.....I got some Captain trollies creeping crack cure, waited for a dry day and applied the milky liquid onto the foam and let it soak in. I did this a couple of times over a couple of days. Leak gone! I have also applied it between the glass and the rubber on the windscreen for good measure. Hope this helps. Damn planet is short of Kryptonite !

Sika Sikaflex EBT + All weather sealant. I used black and ran it over the existing seals (after cleaning and when they were dry)

It supposedly remains flexible so shouldnt crack

Wear disposable gloves and don't apply too much at a time

what makes the defender windscreen surround so different from other cars as i have never had a windscreen go in any car i have owned....i havent checked is the surround ally or steel and are there huge undulations in the metal to let the water through..........Is it just that the windscreen in nearly vertical so less water is deflected off?

My 2014 90 Stationwagon does this. The inside does seem to be staying dry though. Surely can't be good for rust prevention though if the car is sat for a long time with water trapped?

Thanks barney i was hoping for a few more comments as if it happens to everyone then its obviously by design and if not its a seal malfunction.......and i agree about the rust !

sorry but i have just seen this ........if the seals are doing the job properly i would of thought the water should have been kept out...........surely if you dont use your defender for a week all the water will be lying at the bottom rotting the metal?

Defender seals doing a good job

That's why there is such a good lucrative aftermarket supply of footwell repair panels.
