Side Lights
Hola,

Overtook a 110 last week that had very bright side-lights, but where standard housing (i.e. not an NAS upgrade). Further, the headlights seemed to be usual Wipacs (sorry, this was all gleaned in the rear view mirror).

I did some research on line, as I need to buy a replacement side-light and repeater, and was assuming/wondering if:

a. These are LED upgrades? (Assumed)
b. If anyone has used them? (Wondering)
c. Any recommended site/brand/light? (Wondering)

If they were "very bright" then maybe not this, but I have run 10W bulbs in Defender sidelights instead of standard 5W  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I have heard also of people running 21w bulbs instead of 5w.

It is (or at least it used to be) a legal requirement that sidelight and tailight bulbs did not exceed 5w. Given that the lighting rulebook seems to have been thrown away by the EU, it may be that this is no longer the case.

Yes I am guessing that's what they were as they were a sharp, bright white as opposed to just 'brighter' (in answer to Martin/Blackwolf). We only MOT once every two years, so even if illegal it'd only take 10mins to pop them out before an inspection.

Do you use them on your repeaters/tail lights as well or just the side lights? Monsieur Le Grenadier

I like the look of these also Smile

Another reason I'm liking these is the fact that I actually prefer the look of the standard LR lenses over aftermarket options. Thumbs Up

CE certified - whatever that means - although I did wimp out and change them for MOT last week. 5 minutes to swap so not a big problem.

Have only used them in sidelights so far but considering trying the stop/tail combo.

CE certified probably means they're okay if you have a nut allergy.

Going to go for the full whack and do side, tail and repeaters. Then get some Phillip Ice thingys for the headlights. Monsieur Le Grenadier

As an addendum, does anyone with electrical knowledge know if I can do a straight swap with these LEDs for the repeaters/tail/brake lights or whether I would need a relay modification? If so, to 'learn', why would I need one?

Indicators require a flasher unit change for an LED compatible one, the rest are swappable.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I had 10w but the plastic cover melted slightly, back to 5w for the vintage candle glow which I actually prefer..

Not technically illegal but are ILLEGAL to use in place of a filament bulb.


Do NOT confuse an E mark for a CE mark


A CE mark is basically saying it meets basic safety standards.


A CE mark can be placed on low voltage equipment.

Last time I looked our vehicles were 12v DC so how does that CE mark conform to the Low Voltage Directive which is for 75-1500 V DC equipment apply to a LED cluster in a vehicle??

Without wanting to go too far off-topic, just for reference the LVD is only one of many Directives which require the CE mark. As mentioned this lamp doesn't fall within the scope of the LVD. However, it might possibly be CE marked under the EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Directive ie designed to not interfere with a nearby radio / TV. Thumbs Up
