So, assuming that the most weight I have on the back is my race car (800kg), trailer (600kg) and tools (80kg), I should be more than OK with the 'standard duty' springs?

The Defender can tow a maximum of 3,500kg (braked trailer) with a maximum weight at the towball of 150kg.

I tow a 26ft twin axle caravan weighing 1800kg and a boat on a trailer at 900kgs. ( not at the same time, just thought I would add this in expectation off k9f and feketes replies Laughing )

Both tow exactly the same with the different gvw because I have set the nose weight on both trailers to be 145kg. As Glynparry25 stated the trailer axle and wheels carry the load, but you can adjust the noseweight of the trailer by moving weight forwards or backwards on the trailer. With the caravan I put items on the floor towards the front, and the boat by moving the swinging arm closer to the hitch meaning the boat sits further forward on the trailer. This gives a nice stable tow and the suspension on my xs with standard shocks is really comfortable. Also you can buy a good noseweight gauge for less than £20.

I found that the puma springs really arent that good if you're carrying any kind of load in the back, they compress significantly. Solution for me was to fit an extra set of narrower springs which sit inside the standard springs. for normal driving its absolutely as standard. once there is heavy load it sits down on both sets of springs and there is virtually no compression. you wouldnt need that kind of set up just for towing though.

by the way, if you do anything at all in terms of changing suspension, tell your insurer asap, but explain in writing what its for and why you ve done it, and that the parts used are equivalent or better to OEM, otherwise they may get VERY snotty about it and threaten to cancel your cover. Except NFU, they dont seem to care what you do unless you make engine mods.

Fingers crossed! Ordering the dampers on Monday.

Then will probably get the softer rear springs.
