Gearshift knob broken. Where can I find a spare one??
Hello fellow overlanders,

After a 4 week safari to Zambia and Malawi, the only major damage is a broken gearshift knob. Something apparently hit it and caused the surface to fracture.
Can't find a spare on the internet nor the part number.

Any ideas where I could look for it?

Would another 6 gear knob from a different car perhaps fit? There are tons offered on ebay.

Any hints highly appreciated!

Claus

Top of the gearlever is part of the gearlever , you cant replace just the top gearknob ( bit with numbers on it )

The gearlever unclips under the lower rubber gaitor

so no another gearknob of a different car wont fit

Just super-glued mine back on...but it's more a workhorse than a show pony, so doesn't worry me. Probably 18 months ago & still fine.

That's nothing compared to the SVX one's.

Argh! Thanks for all the input - part number, links, etc.!

So, glue then or replacing the whole Shtickk. Maybe glue then plus some aftermarket leather cover. Certainly no shiny aluminum stuff that could blow my interior camouflage…

Wish you a nice summer/(southern) winter then,

Claus

What about the Croytec offerings? They seem to be the middle ground between the SVX shifters and just getting a whole new one from the factory. Plus, you can send them your old one for store credit and you don't have extra clutter lying around.

Also, another option would be to get Bowler shifters? You have to cut the existing levers to mount them on.

Not affiliated with them, just mentioning the other options as this is in the works for me as well.

Hope this helps.

Hi again,

Thanks for the added links once again. Amazing how resourceful this forum can be!

Croytec looks nice. Definitely bookmarking the site.

Seen a pair of the leather covered ones on ebay - for, I believe 190 £. A bit too much to replace essentially just some broken plastic. Had to laugh about the Bowler shifters. They would suit a Defender driving around in Texas, but maybe stick out [sic] too much in Africa.

Cheers,

Claus

I have been looking for the past week for one also, Ted my Lakeland terrier got in last Saturday while I was up in the yard polishing the truck and had a chew on mine! I didn't realise it was part of the gear stick. Censored .
Cheers

Bit like me saying who wants a dog anyway? Whistle

Me I wanted metal! The price for the SVX ones was of serious concern that's why it took me three years before I completed the secondhand set at the prices I was prepared to pay. Stops the dogs, lions or envious passengers from chewing them or getting them broken should I travel to deepest Zambia and Malawi.

Rolling with laughter Bow down Mr. Green

Along with Recaros, LED headlights, Safari Equipment Single Pivot Swingaway, R& T sliders, Croytec door handles and stalk ends....etc.....etc..the list goes on.

That is the beauty about Defender ownership. Thumbs Up

After some looking around, I discovered the Urban Truck option as stated by Venomator, they are billet and the pair is cheaper than going with Croytec if you are budget conscious. Plus, all the graphics are exactly the same as the factory shifters.

I'm actually considering these now but Urban Truck has yet to answer my e-mail on some questions I have... Anybody deal with them before? Croytec replied to me once or twice at least so I'm still on the fence as to which of them I'll go with.

Well, several on here have been saying that in the winter those SVX gear knobs will freeze your hands off. Whistle
We are in the season where temps risk to drop soon, so better get your leather gloves out. You would not want to touch such a terribly icy SVX knob with anything less than a nice lambskin cashmere lined quality leather glove, would you? Laughing
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
