I would treat each and every problem and tackle them individually.
The 'three amigo ABS lights' I also had a long running issue with and it transpired to be a chafed loom where it was routed and rubbing over the rear axle. I used a multimeter and checked for resistance values and for short circuit of each sensor from under the seat. Each sensor should give a value of approximately 1000 ohms. This is the chafed sensor cable I discovered..... Click image to enlarge http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic2394.html?highlight=ohms The intermittent wiper is most likely to be a broken cable in the rear door rubber umbilical. Take the door card off and check for voltage, identify the cable and try to gently pull it out of the umbilical. Indicators, if you still have the original incandescent ones fit them and try them. Do the RDX ones work with the hazard warning switch ok? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Cheers Mal.
I can back probe the ABS cables on Diagnostics to get a read out of values, so that's straight forward. I'm sure it's a short somewhere, as when I pulled up at work I tried the indicators, they worked fine. Also rear wiper was behaving! Interesting to see the picture of your cables. I will try to get out before it's dark, and have a quick look to see if mine are the same! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

No worries. My fault too was intermittent over a period of months and got worse in damp conditions. Each time it went to the dealers the fault would not manifest itself. I could only address it once it degraded into a permanent fault and I had to pull the main ABS fuse to make it driveable. Having had the Defender waxoyled it was very difficult to find exactly where the cable was damaged. I had to crawl underneath with a can of WD40 and plently of rags and wipe the cables down before I eventually felt the damage. As an electrical engineer if memory serves it took me about 8-10 hours to diagnose and fix. Very satisfying when you consider how much it may have cost me in a dealership. Mind you they probably would have just thrown parts at it (new rear loom, sensors etc.) until it was resolved?
Good luck! Hope you get a quick and easy resolution. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Quick update on this, as if you do a search many posts always start with the problem, but then the op never comes back to give the final answer!
After What seems a hell of a lot of probing, poking, stripping, testing I have found the culprit. I checked the earths on the gearbox, nuts all tight, everything seemed fine? So my attention turned to the rear loom/trailer plug, rear lights, wiper motor, still no faults? This turned in to a major headache, back probing ABS sensors time and time again, stripping just about everything I could think of? It manifested itself to be one of the ring terminals on the earth point on the right hand side of the transfer box. It had broken, and was held together by the insulation! This must have happened when I replaced the clutch a few weeks ago, probably tightening the nut? It's taken a few days of head scratching, swearing, and general confusion, I now have working lights/indicators, and No ABS/TC lights Hooorrrrraaaaaaa. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Thanks for the update.
Fantastic result and undoubtedly extremely satisfying you found it yourself. Well done! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

If you read the 1st post and then the last, you realise that you could have linked the issue to the time you had the box out and then would have started with the wires round that and would have found it immediately.
Hindsight is marvellous isn't it. |

Mmmmm.........
Not really, I had done the clutch quite a while before this happened, and have covered many miles since then, The first problem I had was ABS/TC light on, everything else worked. Only in the last couple of weeks the rear lights become an issue. The way this manifested itself I believed it to be a genuine ABS fault. Even then, I checked all earth points, connections around the gearbox, and everything I had disturbed, everything was good and tight. Only when I had time to run diagnostics did it lead me away from modulator/sensor fault. Took a while to find. Got there in the end though 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |
