Leave it as a Brake Light only imhgo - most drivers are already too easily confused...
Wouldn't be too sure on the legality of such a change either... Rog... The GREEN One... MY2016 Urban Truck Build Thread - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic40548....al[/color] |

Hi Munch 90. if you're bored and want to play around with high level brake light have you thought of installing a flashing centre brake light? This flashes for six times then works as a normal brake light. As fitted to some of the latest Mercedes. Some research says that a flashing brake light reduces the reaction time of a following driver. I think a modulating brake light module is about £30.

If you want more tail lights maybe fit some to the top corners on the back of your roof?
If I see a red light in the middle, I would assume it was braking.. Plus I think all UK lights have to be CE marked, which means they have been tested to a certain standard, which means modifying them probably invalidates the testing carried out? My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now |

Why would you want your brake lights to flash? Surely you would just look like a knob? My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. with the durite kit the light flashes only under hard braking we will all look like "knobs" as a lot of all new cars do it as standard and shown to grab the attention of someone about to hit you up the back |

I think you'll find that tail lights have to be matched pairs on opposite sides of the centreline, and a single (or third light) on the centreline is not allowed.

Vehicle Lighting regulations have not kept up with all modern developments.
One requirement under VLR is that all obligatory lights have to be type approved which basically means E marked these days Altering a type approved light say by replacing a filament bulb with a LED will invalidate the type approval. Replacing a burnt out filament bulb with the correct wattage bulb is fine. For any car you need a minimum of two rear position lights as a pair. You are allowed a second pair as well as long as they are in matching positions. Brake/stop lights on a car a matching pair which are E marked. Optional brake lights are allowable but must be type approved E marked (high level brake lights) Now here comes the 'conflicting/interesting' bit! VLR states
Now the Durite flashing unit
Now where I get confused is that the flashing unit might be ECE approved but that is for the flashing unit. When it makes the brake light flash is that road legal under VLR? Does a later EU regulation over ride the older UK VLR? As for the cheap flashing brake lights on ebay? No mention of E marks! Have seen the flashing brake lights in action in Asia and not really impressed with them Some of them puplish/bluish. Brendan |

A lot of new cars come with brakes lamps that flash as standard , think normally under heavy braking , but i think they flash all lights no just high level
so guessing that the normal 2 lower brakelights act as normal , maybe it doesnt matter about high level as its not a legal requirement for mot the high level should work , but only if its got wiring to it , as your not allowed to dismantle to check for wiring thats a bit hard to do example is some vans are fitted with the lense but no wiring and the same van but higher spec will have wiring since joining eu the regs are a nightmare look at mots , you check 13pin tow sockets , but not 7 pin , so its ok for a 7 pin to have faults but not 13 pin whats the difference you still got trailer lights out i brought the lamp controller not one of the whole lamps on ebay , so the lamp will be the same , and controller will be only on high level , lower lamps as standard ( thats if i like look of it ) |

Much confusion presently arises from the fact that it is illegal under EU law for the UK to prohibit any vehicle feature which is legal under EU law.
Because the EU allows flashing brake lights, front obligatory lights mounted less than 600 mm from the road, these moronic "steering" fog lights, and so on, all of which are specifically illegal under UK law as written, they cannot now be legislated against by the UK. In effect, it would be illegal to enforce the UK law as written. This absurd situation makes it sometimes very difficult to know what is, and what is not, actually legal! |
