Hi all......
Defender 110 CSW 2007 Puma TD4 Problem: Generally a crappy ride, and vibration at 110 km/h - no clear cause for this, but appears to be more from the rear axle, and the axle is noisy. Now, over the last 2 weeks there has started to be an excessive tyre wear on the (UK) O/S rear tyre. It is a band at the outside of the tyre, that goes all the way round. Where should I start troubleshooting, bushes? Wheel bearings? Or the rear differential? Thanks, Jon |

Just spent 2 hours under the car.
The wheel bearings feel fine, and there isn't abnormal play in the diff. However, both panhard rod bushes and the trailing arm (where it joins the chassis) look very sad. New bushes will be bought tomorrow. Jon |

how many miles
vibration likely to be prop balance and or UJs need doing. tyres wear, pressures, bushes or alignment issue. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

How long are UJ's supposed to have life expectancy wise?

200,000 kms......
Props are ok. They were done last year, and I couldn't find any play in the UJs. The tyres are worn, but balanced about 9 months ago, and pressures are correct (trailair monitor). HTH Jon |

Does it stop in a straight line?
For tyre wear to develop nd be noticeable in two weeks it would be something noticeable I would of thought. Has vibration started at same time? Props may if been done last year but doesn't mean uj hasn't gone or bal weight come off, no best in them or play checked when off? Or stiff, ie new uj not settled right? Yes it stops in a straight line. - propshafts off yesterday, the weights are on, in v good condition generally, UJ's not "stiff", but OK.
After looking yesterday, and tightening up the saddest of the Panhard rod bushes she was much better this morning, much quieter, and far less vibration - it was noticeable how sad the bush was, I was able to tighten the bolt by about 2mm........ I'll go with new panhard rod bushes, and then I'll do the trailing arm bushes. Best Jon Actually, on the rear it's a sway arm , anti roll bar, or something isn't it? |

vibration is more likely to be something rotational in my experience if it occurs at a certain speed and is more than a rattle. Cheers

I suspect that I actually have multiple things making noise / vibration.
The first to attack was the rear as there is clear uneven tyre wear. As said at the start of the thread this is quite probably linked to axle location. Having changed the anti roll bar bushes last night the beast is much improved and I have removed several bad points, and I hope that tyre wear will become normal. Over the next couple of weeks I'll try and nail down the other vibrations one by one, but having tested everything rotational, either I am a useless tester, or it's not an immediately obvious problem. The only thing that I haven't been able to test is the transfer box...... |

How/where do you get the props balanced? On or off car? I'll get my coat..... |

it needs a special machine.
I went to a local HGV garage, and they did it for a very reasonable fee. Jon |

Have you tried running the spare wheel on that corner to see if there's an improvement? I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
