Idiots guide how the ECU functions
Being relatively new to Defender ownership it has rekindled my interest in vehicles...I am interested to find out if there is any information on how the ECU functions, makes its decisions and what sensors and switches it is connected to...

Thanks for any info...

Dave

I was told by someone from the factory that there's 18,000 lines of code in it.

Which is presumably a fair bit. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop

I may be wrong but I believe it's the process rate you're referring to and not the number of lines of data.

eh? 18000 lines of code is 18000 lines of code irrespective of how fast it's processed isn't it?

Yes you're right - what I was trying to say was I believe the process rate is 18,000 something and not the amount of data held in the ecm.

God knows I know little enough about computers but I think we might be making slightly heavy weather of this.

In answer to the original question, there is online somewhere a diagram of the inputs and outputs of the old Lucas ECU on the TD5, so maybe there is one somewhere for the tdci. I don't know where that might be. Possibly the workshop wiring diagram.

The code comment was really to hint at the processing power of the ECU, which is apparently capable of employing 18,000 lines of code to adjust and respond to a good number of varying engine parameters many times a second in what is a physically hostile environment.

Relatively, that may be no biggie these days(?) but I'm old enough for that still to boggle the mind a bit. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop

Have you tried typing "How does an ECU work" into Google?

You'll find a lot of information already on the web, and they all work in much the same way.

Blackwolf is correct, loads of stuff on t'interwebby, I was searching this topic only last week but there's that much information I decided to come back to it when the cold winter nights set in. I'd rather be out playing with my toys this time of year. Good luck with your searches.
