Hi all,

Quick introduction first off, my names Steve, I'm 23 and a pro car audio installer/fabricator by trade (will not mention who I work for for obvious advertising reasons). I don't own a defender myself but am just about to embark on a nice little project in my uncles 2011 defender and am glad I found this thread. Will be doing a basic audio install, trimming various interior parts, making a custom centre console and deadening as much of the metal work I can get to.

Quick mention of the kit I'm using,

Gladen RS 165 slim 2 way, awesome sounding speakers and thanks to a really clever design (magnet on the front of the speaker) they have a mounting depth of only 43mm which will aid me mounting them in the doors. I had a quick inspection the other day and I'm hoping to use a metal sheet bolted to the door to mount a solid wooden baffle to, but I'm yet to see if there's space inside with the window as there really isn't a lot of room, but it would be ideal if I could.

Gladen SQX 8" woofer, not had any experience with the 8", but have installed a couple of 10s before to great effect, nice powerful punchy bass which seeing as this is more of an SQ install than a windscreen shaker, It's exactly what we want. And with the optimum enclosure size being just 10" square (around .35 cubic ft) it will be nice and easy to install in the custom centre console/cubby box.

Head unit is an alpine one installed by the dealer they purchased it off. I know it's not very adventurous sticking with the same brand for everything, but I've installed a lot of gladen/mosconi kit and always been really happy with the exceptional build quality and sound.

Kit should be with me on Monday and will try update regularly, look forward to getting involved in the forum

Here is my 2p's worth.

Fitted this lot back in March;

Will be adding another sub in mirror to this one on the drivers side as I think that will bring the base level up just right.

Was mostly easy to fit, getting the amp in the posistion I chose behind the dash was a PITA!!!

The sound quality is amazing, no distortion even if you crank it up. Bluetooth calls through the head unit are now much clearer as well.

100% worth doing this upgrade if your considering it. I used a shop in "creepy" Crawley called Road Radio. Seemed to be the cheapest around. Think they may also have a website.

Like the idea of the Dynamat on the rear speaker panels.

The Dynamat was to give a bit of body to those stupid plastic speaker housings, if anything to stop them rattling!!

Works a treat though, give them a tap and there is a reassuring thud rather than that horrid plasticy sound.

I know what you mean on those, they aren't the best things in the world for acoustics.

Help,

I want to raise the cubby 2 reasons to make it the right height for me, and fit two amplifiers underneath.

Just been taking a look and the fixings don't really leave much free space underneath.

So ideally I want to refix it as close to the edge as possible.

Anyone come across this problem before and has a good fix.

Thanks

Sub is a 8 inch focal unit bolted to the back of the cubby, managed to use the existing holes that held a cargo net so avoided butchering the cubby. I need to raise the cubby and move it slightly further forward.

The two side pods house focal 165 krs and their crossovers and the tweeters will be in the side trim.

next stage is pulling out the front seats and cubby and sound deadening and new carpet, then wiring in the amps etc...

Apologies, I meant to reply to your post above regarding the cubby but overlooked it.
What is the cubby currently mounted on metal rails?

its a loc box one from Exmoor trim, it has 4 studs underneath and rails at the side

my current thinking is to use aluminium angle iron to raise it up along the side so that I have a clear space underneath for the amplifier.

Indeed you could or even some wood, might make things easier.
Like you say there needs to be some room there or it's effectively sealed in.

For all the double cab owners, I fitted a slim line 8inch pioneer sub behind the second row seats in a custom box, the box is the correct dimensions to give the required amount of internal space for the sub so performs very well, not a massive window shattering bass but a very good improvement and also hidden from sight. cost me about £110 for the wood, speaker and connections, so relatively cheap. (also needs wiring kit, amp and a better head-unit)

amp was installed under the left rear seat and the wiring fed from the back of the battery box, out under the car and then up through the rear floor panel and under the seat.

That looks really good, seems a lot of volume for a single 8 looks great and really tucked away

Where did you put your amplifier?
