Slovenia and Croatia in the Summer
I m planning a 10-15 day trip around Slovenia and Croatia in the summer. Can anyone recommend where to find routes / way points, I plan to mix camping with hotels. Would love to get off the tarmac, but not too challenging as will only be one vehicle

Should be a great trip - I've seen a few spectacular photos of some of the sights of Croatia and driven the Julian Alps in Slovenia.

Keep us updated as to how your planning goes. Thumbs Up

I've toured Croatia fairly extensively over the years. Been down the about 6 times now. Plus a couple of 6 month holidays courtesy of HM Govt.
What veh will you be in? What do you want to see? What is your budget? How far S into Croatia do you want to go? 110 D250 SE HT

Slovenia - lake bled and the Triglav national park is really where it's at; Some of the best routes I've found in Slovenia have been through the Triglav national park and there are loads of them. Mainly forest gravel roads with not much traffic. If you've got a few days venturing over towards the other lake in the park Bohinsko Jezero is also beautiful and quieter too....

TomTom Eastern Europe app is your friend and has amazing amounts of detail for slovenia, enough to give you surfaces and scenery a plenty.

Another part of Slovenia I would recommend is an area further South which is essentially another national park but I can only remember the name Sneznik? It was the name of the famous? road that led up and near a village of the same name. Again all gravel and forests. Just checked on my map of saved roads... another is Masun which is relatively nearby, oh and the 915.

Croatia - I've spent months there and I love it so much i am going back next month to look at property in Dalmatia If your coming from Slovenia then Rovinj is a must although that is coastal. Further inland Plitzvica Jezera national park is another must and there is a couple of rather nice roads up and around there too but the main sights are stunning waterfalls that you get rather up close too on 50yo rotting wood but it adds to the charm. Further south Krka national parks a bit more of the same but very different at the same time. But as regards nice off the beaten track road, inland is definetely where it's at and I found various stunning time warp villages up in the mountains / hills near the Bosnian border. 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped....

would agree with comment on Lake Bled area. Stunning countryside and there is a big, clean, spaced out campsite at one end of the lake. Thinking myself of heading out there later in the year.

Been down a few times, once by car and also on the motorbike.

As above, Plitzvica is lovely. Russian coldwar concrete buildings, but an awesome set of lakes (and fish).

We particularly enjoyed the Istria area, especially Rovinj, and stayed at the Katarina island hotel

If you get as far as Dubrovnic, that's also awesome Smile

The mountain passes thru the Alps (Grossglockner for instance) are stunning by car and even better by motorbike Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Thanks to Tim for that picture. It was a bit of a shock when we saw that as we left the woods and returned back to the blacktop.
At Mountain Man, it wasn't in our remit to clear minefields. But there is a small active demining programme being conduct now. The minefields are surveyed every year to see if there has been any mine migration. Mines do move underground when there is water present. Some of the mines used back then were Spanish by design and they are waterproof so will float in water.
There is a website which shows all the minefields that are currently marked. If you go WAAY off the beaten track you may find some unmarked minefields but you'd be daft to do that. There is plenty to see without going off piste.

As for places to see, Plitvika Lakes is outstanding. It's a world heritage site. I think it's 26 miles if you walk round. When we went Tim and I walked a bit and then went and found a campsite for the night. Didn't have the energy or time to walk 26miles.

When I was down there 18 months ago the wife and I found a nice hotel in Zadar. Called Hotel Bastion. We only chose it by complete accident. We drove into Zadar looking for a hotel and as I'd just left Camp Bastion in Afghan it just seemed appropriate to stay there. When we booked in, we realised it was a 4* hotel. But only €160 for B&B. In the end we stayed for 4 nights.

If you want to head down to Dubrovnik, you have to cross the coastal part of Bosnia. Not sure about your insurance but mine covered me for Croatia but not Bosnia. So if I'd of gone that far South I would of had to buy insurance at the border.

We did go as far as Split. Stayed at a nice hotel in the old town. Very pretty and lots of olde worldy stuff to do.

Although the currency is Kuna and it was about 10-1 against the £ they all take €. You'll get a rubbish exchange rate but you can spand it. 110 D250 SE HT
