Hi,
Just been out and checked mine, it looks the same as your picture. Infact both sides are the same. To be honest I've never noticed it before. Myers - Somewhere on Salisbury Plain Puma 90 Hardtop (XS Spec) |

Thanks for checking, its just a trial fit by laying over. Even when the vent covers on the top it was the contour of the recess it fits into that I was concerned about. The cover will be flush with the edge of the chequer, then the wing depression bends out and back in again underneath it all. Looks strange to my eyes!

Oh - I think I get it - the profile change that is visible just above the top line of the checker plate in your picture ?

That's it!!
![]() ![]() I'm wondering why the chequer plate doesn't go further under the bonnet, like this one for instance.... ![]() Maybe that's just different chequerplate, which is fair enough, just wondering what most of them look like and whether this is a common problem. |

Mine ends short of the bonnet line like yours and the issue is that the recess does tend to fill up with fine dirt:

It's not a large gap and I don't think that there's space for 3mm plate along the full edge. Here's one I saw with the consequent damage: ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Indeed, if the chequerplate goes to the inner edge of the wing and bonnet is not adjusted accordingly wear and rub damage will occur. Adjustment to clear the plate is ok at the front of the bonnet but to get lift at the back is a lot more difficult. Steve.

Surely the intake covers are meant to sit sunk down inside the hole go the chequer plate, not on top. Mine certainly does on my TD5.
Not that they provide an airtight or watertight seal, but the certainly wouldn't sat on the ridges of the chequer plate. ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Think you have two major differences there, first if you have a TD5 bonnet they cut in further, and leave more wing exposed at the top, not exposed but you get what I mean you can see more of the top of the wing. That means the plate can be wider, which means it covers up the hole anyway.
But also you have an aftermarket intake grill? What grill and chequer do you have? If someone designed chequer to do what you have on a Puma bonnet the chequer would have to have a gap in it at the very edge I think. |

The KBX wingtop has the same footprint as the original cover.
On the TD5 the gap between bonnet and wing is big enough for small animals to climb through so chequer fits underneath, I'm guessing that's not the case with the puma bonnet. You guys and your fancy narrow panel gaps ![]() |

The basic problem is Land Rover Defender build tolerances with the vast number of different after market chequer plate manufacturers and their different tolerances.
The position of the aerial for instances can vary so get the aerial actually concentric in the hole and the the chequer plate lined up correctly with the wing edge. Let alone is the bonnet actually dead centre on the bulkhead? To overcome this problem some aftermarket manufacturers make the chequer plate slightly shorter so no issue with aerial hole. Heater air intake and wing top blank plate? Three options 1) The cheapest/simplest solution is to make the hole larger then the actual wing top plates. OK my opinion this is the worst looking version 2) Cut the wing top hole slight smaller then the wing top plates. Really you need gaskets of reasonable thickness to prevent watermuck seeping under the plates. 3) Cut the wing top plate holes smaller then mill a flat so that the plates can sit flat on the milled surface. Only need a thin gasket to seal the plates. This is the most expensive option but probably the best looking one. Small rubber bump stops will stop the bonnet rubbing. The quality of the powder coating can vary from a quick top coat only to proper preparation, base coat and top coat. Then there is the actual shaping of the wing top. It would probably be fair to say that the cheaper the chequer wing tops the lower the overall quality. Brendan |
