Mine goes under the bonnet, it does indeed foul the bonnet as MOG suggested if bonnet is not adjusted properly.
In my case the hinge bushes were worn dropping it but about a mm causing the two to touch.
Since adjustment and new hinge shims all is good and a mminor paint touch up.
I'd rather it this way than having a gap with dirt in it, every time you clean up you'd have to open the bonnet and that'll cause wear in its self.
