Cheers for that, BM. Just to clarify;
Would the standard LR springs be the CSW ones that Martin refers to? (The white / green ones?) Is it a specfic model of Koni shock that you have fitted? Thanks Tarrel 2012 Defender Utility Wagon 1981 SIII 88 inch SW Follow our blog: www.newlifeinnorthernscotland.blogspot.co.uk |

Yep - as BM52 says...
Moving from USW to CSW shocks, combined with Koni Heavy Trak gives a great improvement - especially at the rear (front benefits are less pronounced). The ride is much less choppy, and SWMBO is a lot happier... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Actually, having read these posts, I did a small experiment over the weekend. Dropped the front tyre pressures to 28 and the rears to 35 (they were on 42), and put 150kg of wood briquettes in the load area. What a difference! Definitely prompted me to make some changes to the suspension.
I'm really surprised at how high the recommended rear tyre pressures are on the USW (as per the label on the B-pillar) - 48psi for light loading and 65psi fully laden / towing?? If this is correct, is it OK to run at 35 on the rear? The tyres certainly don't look under-inflated. 2012 Defender Utility Wagon 1981 SIII 88 inch SW Follow our blog: www.newlifeinnorthernscotland.blogspot.co.uk |

Many thanks for all the good write up and awesome information. Would fitting a new set of 110 Station Wagon (3050kg) onto the rear of my 110DC make much of a difference? Cheers mike

I'm going this weekend from CSW to HD (130 ones) springs as I usually goes heavy every weekend. I'm putting Cellular Dynamics springs (Koni can't be delivered to Colombia), hope this improve my handling when loaded. Genuine springs failed after about 20 trips to the farm loaded with 1800 kg. Not big fail, they only loose some height and reaction when big potholes in the road.

Put gen LR Wolf spec rears on my 110, and hd + 1" on the front. Quite stiff, corners as if on rails, but I do load it up 'sometimes', and head across that France.

Has anyone changed the rear springs on their 90?

Martin,
Thanks for a great write up. Looking to order some spring this week. I didn't see a response on what you thought of the modification, so was hoping you or others could give me some feedback on this before I spend my pennies. Thanks, Scott... Scott - sorry thought I had:
This is a real improvement. However it's still not what I really want, so I have spoken to a couple of supplier about a -1" lowering at the back, and also maybe 20% softer springs (USW springs are slightly shorter than CSW springs, so you'll also notice this with headlamp alignment!). -1" will drop the rear ride height (unladen) to something slightly under original USW spec. Don't also forget that a USW will be slightly lighter at the back than a CSW (no extra seats in the back, no side windows), so with the same springs, the USW will still be a harder ride than a CSW... Then...the thing with softening the springs is that it's more likely to lean too much in corners, so may have to uprate the rear anti-roll bar (ARB) at the same time to keep the road-manners acceptable. Some suppliers do uprated ARB and spring kits...still investigating... This is getting expensive Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Hi Martin,
I apologise for missing your original write up, I did read that post but completely missed it was you! Doh! Thanks for the in depth analysis, I have just spent 2 weeks with about 300k of gravel in the back (I wasn't intending it to be there that long) and it drove like a dream - well apart from the stopping distance and fuel economy! I think I will still order these up as a starting point, I carry about an additional 50kg permanently over standard at the rear anyway so hopefully this will account for the lack of seats vs the CSW. Thanks again, Scott... Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition) |

Pardon my ignorance but do the springs have different ratings depending whether they are offside or nearside? |

They don't have a different spring 'rate' but the drivers side will be slightly longer (regardless of LHD or RHD I believe) on some models where 2 part numbers are listed for the front. This is down to weight distribution.
Interestingly the newer ones don't seem to be sided! Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition) |

Quick question, I notice Genuine springs have coloured markers painted on them.
I'm assuming this is to signify the difference between HD, 110 & 90 /. 130 and front and rear etc. Doesn't anyone knock which is which and part numbers? I only ever light tow and don't like the idea of HD springs as I know they give a rough ride 90% of the time unless your carrying weight. *edit* Apologies, appears to be listed above on the second page of this thread. |
