Definitive TD5 flush and refill guide (coolant)
Hi Guys,

Slowly working through my 110's issues and need to flush and refill the coolant. I have been all over the place trying to work out the best way of flushing the system.

Could i put a hose in the expansion tank, pull a pipe going to the heater matrix and run the engine until its clear followed by refilling with oat coolant?

I am also going to need to add some UV dye to the system to find a small coolant leak (hopefully not the gasket).

I know this is probably really simple but I have read lots of contradictory methods for the job.

Thanks

James

Hi
when I did mine I too researched how to do it but eventually decided to take the bottom pipe from the radiator and drained it that way. Got about 6.5-7 litres out that way and then refilled. There is a way of draining the coolant from the engine block but you need to take off the viscous fan and then the alternator and behind that is the drain plug but I decided against that. I did run some clear water through the radiator to flush it though.
Hope this helps

Thanks Tommo, I would like to fully flush the system though so I will try the wipping a hose off technique if no one else comes along with a suggestion.

Planning on doing the same this weekend.

Came across G13 coolant, it's Ethylene Glycol/Glycrine based so not OAT but H-OAT.

Manual says Ethylene Glycol based with OAT corrosion inhibiters.... would I be ok using the G13, what do you guys recon?

Also, is it really necessary to use distilled water?

what about comma red anti freze super longlife
Pure concentrated ethylene glycol, silicate free with Organic Acid Technology.

distilled water would be better as no inpurites , but many don't bother and use tap water or clean rain water
that decision would be up to you !!!

I bought 25 litres of deionised water from Mole Valley Farmers, about £8. Well worth it IMO to keep the system as clean as possible.

Bought demineralised or distilled water (can't remember which) and G12+ spec coolant.

Any idea how much water will be left in the system after I've drained and flushed it with a garden hose, I will have to account for it if I want to achieve proper 50/50 dilution.

Can I flush it through the expansion reservoir?

g12 is mainly a vw/audi antifreeze , and should not be mixed with any other coolant ( ment to turn like jelly if mixed )

just thought you would like to know

but really its best not to mix any anti freezes

think ? comma g40 is same as g12 , but you pay more normally for g12 as that's the number vw use for it

I have used Ford coolant (Ford Super Plus Premium) as it is the same as adviced by LR (Texaco Havoline XLC):

Ford Specification WSS-M97B44-D
Contains Ethenediol, Ethylene Glycol
Pink / Orange Colour

Just bought 5ltrs of Halfords OAT stuff and am picking up a britpart top hose bleed screw on the way home from work. Hopefully get job done this weekend as previous ownes seem to have just used water!

However, need to drop sump on my Series 3 this weekend and do some ant-rust stuff on its chassis as well, so might not have time till next weekend.

Hmmm Didn't get time to replace water with OAT ... however I now have a radiator dumping its contents due to a leak in the offside corner. Going to try K-Seal first but suspect I'm installing a new radiator Santa - 1977 Series 3 - new chassis, tub, disc brakes,SU Carb

Yeah! There is a voice at the back of my mind saying "Just change the radiator", it'll never work. Remember from by triumph spitfire and fiat 124 days that quick fixes never worked. If it puts it off for a mth or so that would be fine,
