yes, can see both sides and know what gap i can get it through or reverse it in to. They only thing i can't see is the leg of the engine in the middle at the back - but you wont see that even with 6ft long extensions !

Towing mirrors
As I tow a 26ft caravan I checked with the milenco website and found this:


Towing Mirrors – The Law
The Law in the United Kingdom specifies, you must be able to see clearly down both sides of the caravan/trailer, and see 4 meters either side of the caravan/trailer at a distance of 20 meters behind the rear of the caravan/trailer.
This in reality means, if your caravan/trailer is wider than the rear of your tow vehicle, you must fit towing mirrors to comply with the law. You can be fined up to £1000 and get 3 point on your licence for towing blind. (At exhibitions, we have met many caravanners that had received 3 points and £60 fixed penalty notices.)
On tow vehicles conforming to directive 2003/97 EC or sold after January 2007, the towing mirrors may project 25cms further than the widest part of the caravan. On tow vehicles pre dating this directive, the mirrors may project 20 cms further than the widest part of the caravan.
Since 12th of December 2005 it is a legal requirement that you have type approved (e-marked) mirrors on both sides of the tow vehicle.

I use Magnum xl mirrors which are ideal for the defender and cost less than £20 a pair Very Happy

Does this means that only extended mirrors have to be E-marked, or that mirrors used when towing have to be E-marked, or all mirrors have to be E-marked?

I am guessing that only the clip-on temporary extended mirrors need E-marks.

I don't think my standard (Britax?) mirrors are marked at all.

Hi,

I tow a 8.25m caravan with my Defender 110, I fitted some Britpart extension arms with large Spafax unbreakable mirros from Paddocks. The near side one is convex as I've a Hard Top and have a blind spot anyway (no side windows). I can see round my rig when towing and like this setup even when not towing, as I've great visability.

Didnt the law change recently regarding what you now have to be able to see behind what ever it is you are towing? when i say recently i mean 2 years ago. For example towing a box bodied Ifor at max width meant we needed extended mirrors on the works D3s. Cheers

PS 27 inches is not very big. Do you sleep standing up? Whistle

In Chile the regulation in not so strict about the mirrors/towing, but better be in the safe side.

I will see also SMAT Nord mirrors, according other forums are a good alternative an fits on Defenders.

They are called smat magnum mirrors and pennine leisure stock them. Drop them an email to confirm size as smat has changed their mirror names! Basically they work on a scissor action to adjust to the size of your mirror and are held on by lugs on the front and strong rubber straps on the back. Was going down the motorway in the summer and was accidently doing 70mph Rolling Eyes whilst towing and they where rock steady, plus if you lose one they are only a tenner Smile

I've converted the misleading imperial units to metric units to keep things on-topic. Embarassed

A 110HT is classed as a commecial vehicle, my mirrors are not as obtrusive as many other vans and get the job done. Just trying to be helpful...
