A bit of a thread resurrection....

Sofar we had done the EVO/Nolden comparison test in static underground garage conditions. Which were pretty good conditions to compare I think, and result was basically that with some slight differences in light spread and light color, you could call the result a par...

Now, while I know how my Speaker EVO perform on the road in the dark, I did never experience the same for the Nolden, until last friday that is...

I had the pleasure on friday to drive back in the Hunter of my friend kitoper from Entreq in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen all the way back to Geneva. A 5 hour drive, with quite a few long tunnels to pass.

Kitoper has the Nolden on his Hunter, and for the first time I could see from the passenger seat how they perform in all those tunnels. Very, very good I must say. Kitoper's Nolden are well aligned as to height, and there is no real hotspot visible then (which is something I feared they would), the overall light emission forward is a very regular pattern, strong, and the light beam to both sides of the road is quite strong and far reaching also. So overall a very, very good lamp, easily at par with the performance of my EVO.

thanks Eric - as my Defender mentor Thumbs Up your observations are always welcome. As one of my first comments suggest, for me it was more about looks on our vehicles. Noldens to keep an older look and EVOs are for a more modern SVX. As per light output both beat the original halogens hands down.

Eric, you are very complimentary with respect to the Noldens, you've given a very honest appraisal. Could it be that you maybe think the Noldens may just be, a bit better?....Just trying to "read" into your lines?

No, that is not what I am saying at all. If you reread the comparison thread from the start again, you will see that we said that in the underground garage conditions we saw a more pronounced hotspot with the Nolden than with the Speaker EVO.
The Speaker EVO seemed to have a more equally distributed light pattern there.
In all honesty, in various pictures posted by some on here later, you often can also see that pronounced hotspot with the Nolden. And kitoper in the beginning had such hotspot with his Nolden.
But, that seems largely a matter of not perfectly levelling them. Kitoper later has been able to raise his Nolden beam up some without blinding oncoming traffic, and when we were driving last friday, I did not see any hotspot anymore. As said the lightbeam was strong and wide. Actually very similar to the Speaker EVO which I have, so I cannot do better than still call them a par. Thumbs Up

I don't know about the EVO2, they seem to be a leap ahead again as to light production. Don't think I will find out quickly, because my EVO are very good and LED are supposed to last forever, mine do neither rust, nor fog up ever, and I much prefer the smaller parking light LED in my EVO than the half circle parking light of the EVO2.

dgardel, as far as your grinning is concerned... In this whole discussion about Speaker vs. Nolden, I have tried to give a honest comparison based on what you really see, and I have not let myself guide, or better misguide, by silly non standardized apples and pears lumen number discussions. And certainly not by throwing into this same comparison experiences of the older first generation Speaker (which probably indeed had its flaws) with the newer Nolden as some on here have been keen to do.

I think that Nolden and JWS are very closer in performance and people can choose what likes without fear of a wrong purchase.

I have had both JWS and Nolden lights as have several others, output on both far exceed OEM and for that reason alone either is an excellent upgrade. A few lumens/hotspots aside in comparison nobody should fret and I don't give a toss as mentioned both are fantastic. The quality of any headlight stretches far beyond light output which most people seem to purely concentrate on and get 'hung up on' and nothing else. There are other considerations as BPman touched on with regards to where they are made perhaps and guarantee (for what it may or not be worth)? Which could be an issue for some. IP rating, rear finish etc. should also be looked at when spending several hundred pounds on such an upgrade NOT just puely the output alone.

Q. How many people have experienced both brands and swapped either one way or the other?

No need for answers on a fine quiet Bank Holiday. Let's keep it that way. Enjoy it! Off to the New Forest.

Thanks Eric, good test and useful insight. I have to say, and I know this is really prissy, but given how equal they are I do prefer the Noldens based on what they look like when they are switched off.... Whistle Not so sure about the Speakers' four-bulb set up. I read somewhere that the Noldens are the upgrade used for the three LR Official Heritage vehicles....look bloody smart.

That sort of thing is usually measured in candlepower isn't it?

Total light output in lumens, intensity in candlepower?

To learn the peak beam candlepower of a lamp with a standard-wattage bulb operating at 12 Volts, divide the reference number on the lamp by 37.5, then multiply the result by 112,500. But remember, a lamp with a higher reference number is not necessarily a better lamp than one with a lower number.




This is taken from a North American website HERE. It is slightly out of date as it was done in 07, however in 09 (ish) the maximum beam peak intensity reference number was raised to 100.


Put it crudely it is a measure of the brightest spot in the main beam.
