Over the last couple of evenings fitted a full set of Exmoor Trim carpeting to Gracie, our new 110, since she just came with front matting and a couple of thin rubber mats in the back. Even so, she was still quieter than our fully sound proofed Td5.
The Exmoor Trim carpeting is okay in the front, and fits quite well with all the cutouts need apart from, strangely, the handbrake. The rear isn't too bad either, but doesn't cover the angle sections of the wheelboxes at the front. The edges aren't finished either, just laser-cut, so look a little untidy. Other sections of carpet are edged nicely, including some that can't be seen So, I used sections of the factory matting to fill in various gaps and cover the exposed paintwork, not only to protect it but also stop precious cargo from getting scratched (Cannondale tandem...). The best parts of the existing matting are the front footwell sections, so I reused them under the new carpeting. The worst part is the section that covers the rear of the seatbox - it's slight over-long, but nicely finished so hard to shorten without having a join somewhere. It fixed into place, but not nicely and ruckled up a bit. Then I did what can only be described as a typical Nosnibod cock-up... I had bought some genuine carpet trim finishers for the rear of the seatbox, to hold that carpet nicely and stop it coming unstuck if second-row passengers gave it a kicking. They are held in position with self-tappers and I managed to screw through the wiring loom to the offside rear door courtesy light switch, permanently earthing it I only found out when I'd finished, put away all the tools and then use the keyfob to lock Gracie. Cue a double beep from the horn and the interior lights were still on. Thinking I'd left a door open, I went round and nope, no door open... After a while the penny dropped and I eventually found what I'd done after looking underneath and finding a nice cabling run right where I drilled and screwed a self-tapper into. Fortunately it appears that no other damage was done. I removed the long self-tappers and replaced them with much shorter ones and sprayed Dynax UC50 over everything to help keep out any moisture from where I'd nipped the wire. Problem solved and I'm only feeling slightly idiotic... Thankfully, the carpeting has made Gracie even quieter and the 'whoosh' from underneath has gone completely. Otherwise Gracie is running in nicely and I've mostly adapted to her slightly weird driving habits, and things like the kangeroo'ing and become less and less frequent. One thing I have to make a conscious effort to avoid is having the clutch pedal even slightly depressed at low revs, for example turns that require 2nd gear. If I forget, she kangeroos: if I remember, she's smooth... Dave Green Goddess - 1998 Defender 110 300tdi |

Went to recover a lovely old Jowewett Jupiter sports car that was having starting problems, only had to fetch some bits in the end as the old chap managed to discover it was the feed to the fuel pump so did a get home repair with some of my wire direct from the battery.
So all the land rover did really was standby tow vehicle |

Used mine today as a spanner carrier(well they live in there all the time anyway) to get a Ferret running. A chap I know couldn't get it started and got me to have a look.
It had a good spark but there was trouble getting fuel to the carb. I got it sorted after a while and gave him the good news and told him discreetely where the problem lay ................... it turns out that on a Ferret the fuel tank is a saddle tank and when the fuel gets low it drains out one side of the low part but with foresight the Daimler company put fuel outlets in both sides but with a manual lever to pick which side to drain. Turned the tap to the other side and it fired up instantly! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Good old L/R sunroof was leaking like a sieve. Booked it in to Liam at East Kilbride sunroof centre who I have had excellent service from over the years with a few different motors. Anyway, the only way to sort it was to order a genuine parts sunroof and fit it properly this time. Whilst removing the old one he noted that it must have been leaking for some time. There was plenty grot under the rubber finisher trim, and most of the screws that are used were rusty. (He also spotted that the 11 year old glass was slightly warped and not sitting flat on its old rubber seal.) Quite a few of the screws sheared whilst being unscrewed, one gave up the ghost as soon as he put the TORX bit against it without even turning it! Once the screws were out he removed the inner clamp and the outer part of the sunroof without any resistance. He said this showed how poorly it was fitted as there was no adhesion between it and the roof panel - basically just sitting against the roof. The original roof (and the genuine replacement) had a self adhesive 'draught excluder' type foam seal as a sealing face and to stop rain coming in. Liam threw this away and gave it a good 1/4" bead of proper bonding sealant for the mating surfaces to sit against. This ensures there is no chance of water getting between the outer part of the sunroof and the roof panel itself. Once it was all fitted he cleaned up any of the sealant that had 'squished' out from underneath the sealing faces. He then fitted the finishing trim etc inside and the jobs a good un. We lifted the Brownchurch rack back on and bolted it down again - we had to remove it previously for him to access the sunroof properly. Hopefully my sunroof will remain dry for a good number of years now

Over the weekend I fitted a removable shelf which spans the wheel arches to provide a flat load bed and a discreet gap underneath for items best kept away from view.
Click image to enlarge The platform is 18mm ply cut to fit, with four captive bolts that can be secured from underneath the wheel arches. I've cut the platform in 2 to make it a bit easier to handle, and there is a simple peg and hole arrangement between the two under the floor mat to keep them lined up. The front section has cargo tracks installed to help with load management and to hold down the rubber checker-plate floor mat. Drove to work and trialled my new Dashcam App. Here's the video. Excuse the Armin van Buuren, it was all I had on. The app works well, given it is free. Top tips: 1. make sure you get a really solid phone mount, to prevent it bouncing around. 2. Plug your phone into the charger or it will run out of juice within a couple of ours. 3. Upgrade to the paid version so that you can run it in the background. Otherwise, for the money, excellent. For the techy types, this is run on an HTC One Mini2. Not a bad picture IMO.

Good picture quality, I find with my htc one I get a wobble with my video, I don't know whether it's due to it working through the heated screen elements or just the phone software https://www.facebook.com/johnr.witherslewi...mp;theater

Took delivery last week of two nice new Exmoor Trim seats for the front of the 90. I got a free upgrade from modular seats to premium modular, so can't argue with that. Anyway, the weather has been pants, so with it being a bit drier tonight I managed to get them fitted between showers. Still to have the heaters wired up, but this can be done a day when I can be bothered to get round to it - hopeful before winter reappears - so I've probably got a fortnight to do it Only been for a short spin to see what they are like, but definitely an improvement over the standard seats which I felt a bit uncomfortable on my lower back. The thick padding brings my legs closer to the steering wheel, so the wheel might be on the (never ending) list of things to change or modify. The wife thought they were a huge improvement as she can now put her head back onto a decent headrest as she frequently has pains in her back etc.
I also filled up today, my economy figure has risen since the last fill, now at 28.8 mpg. It has improved a bit since fitting the Michelin Latitude tyres a week or so ago. Will stick up a couple of pictures - one after the seats were out and one with the new seats fitted. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |
