What I would like to add is a simple VDO water temp gauge, one which shows the real water temp, but it seems not so easy to find a spot to install the sensor for that. It has been discussed in an older thread, but without resolution....

South Africa 2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 CSW Tonga Green
Ok so just as a recap, I have a 2009 defender 90 with 180 000km on the clock.
I've had the high running temps for at least the last 80 000km(since I got my ultra gauge).

I've changed intercoolers, thermostats, bled the cooling system and nothing helped.

Last week I found a small leak on my radiator and decided to replace the radiator with a brand new OEM one.

My temps are now running in the low to mid 80 degree C. At least 10 - 15 deg C cooler than in the past.

I recon, if your vehicle is a little older and starting to run warmer than expected, change that radiator.

I am over the moon.

After what Dg said I double checked! That's the one I have Ericvv. I have now done several continuous 1500Km runs,( other than fuel stops.) with noworries! Thumbs Up

Still having a good run with that new thermostat, Pannawonica?

Beery I would not consider going back too the original! However on the ultra gauge I have noticed a slower warm up and not quite as hot heater. Not that it's important. It's winter here so we are seeing 20C or so, had 3ton on the trailer and it did not break a sweat! Very Happy

Great to hear. I'm moving up to Darwin soon so think it might be time for the swap. I've found genuine brand PEL500110 online for $99 in NSW.

Im surprised the warm up time is affected!

Warm up time is affected because its fitted with soft spring allowing more bypass when cold

i found the thè same when i tested it , but i was in uk winter and decided it was no good for uk

Isn't there also an 82c version with a hard spring? Do you know the part number?

part numbers are not always right as some suppliers are using the same numbers for diffirent stats

cream colour is 88 hard spring , standard fitment
black is 82 hard spring , one I found ok in uk
gray is 82 soft spring , I found longer warm up and temp went up and down

all this in uk , of course your temps may given different results

black one (82,hard spring) should be PEM101021

Thanks Munch,

I've just ordered a genuine MG/Rover black PEM101021 from Rimmer Bros. I trust their reliability with part numbers.

We'll see how it goes and I'll compare with Pannawonica's results. In the next month or two I'll be seeing ambient temps in the mid 30's on a run up to Darwin so it will be a good test.

Cheers
Tom

In the Pilbara in summer its ordinary too see high 40, 50deg C so I went for the soft spring. I did not want too revisit, the next thing on my mind was some form of uprated radiator. Thumbs Up

we can also use PEM101020: it's open at 82°C, and it has "hard bypass spring" too like the Defender original one. It's better for the warmup phase (shorter)

But I don't know which are the differences from PEM101020 and PEM101021

surfing the web, they seem to have the same features (may be the *020 is superseded by the *021) Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Interesting that as this discussion started with the soft spring PEL500110 only, it now evolved into the hard spring PEM101020 or 21. Good to know about the latter.
As several on here I have installed the soft spring PEL500110 which should do the main trick, i.e. keeping running temps a bit lower and avoiding (delaying) risk of overheating, which now in summer works just fine. My temp gauge now in summer is moving from cold to normal just as before it seems, not any slower.
I have a good idea how in winter my engine temp gauge goes from cold to normal, so going to watch if there is any slowdown, in which case I might also change to this hard spring 82°C PEM101020/21 thermostat.
Time will tell, as far as I'm concerned, still hoping for an extended summer period. Thumbs Up
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Yes I read somewhere while researching that the 020 is superseded by 021. Same thermostat.

It still makes no sense to me that the bypass spring stiffness affects warmup time. As I understand, it is simply there to relieve pressure on the heater circuit when revs rise and the thermostat is still closed. The bypass, bypasses the radiator, returning coolant from the head straight back to the block i.e. "warmup phase"

Or have I got something wrong...?

Well it appears I have wasted my money.

My PEM101021 arrived today. The correspondence from Rimmer Bros only began to mention 87 degrees after it had been shipped.

So I did the scientific 'pot-on-stove' experiment with a thermostat and can confirm that it only begins to open at around 87c.
Genuine MG/Rover so its a reliable part number.

Looks like I'll go and fork out for a PEL500110 and keep the 101021 as a spare.
