2003 TD5 going up hill lost of power?
I found my 2003 TD5 has lost power while going up hill, even I lower the gear from 3 to 2(lower one gear even worst, look like need to pick up from the beginning...), full pedal gas, TD5 acceleration still no improve, been searching this might be the turbo wastegate or the MAF sensor, or both, really need some help here to figure put what happened!
The TD5 can go around 70+ mph on highway, but slow down when going up hill... Big Cry

Could be one of many things, try this to see if your wastegate is stuck....

Next thing to check is that you don't have a split intercooler hose, or one of the hoses might have blown or popped out?

Might be worth changing the fuel filter too if it's not been done recently, you can easily unplug the MAF sensor and go for a drive with it unplugged to see if it makes a difference, also, look at the wiring harness, check the red connector under the seat that goes into the ecu, if there's oil in the loom it might just need cleaning with brake cleaner.
Best of luck

Hi, Lambley, actually what does this push do to the wastegate?
does it release something?
Where is the intercooler hose located? Neutral

If you look at the turbo, you will see a rod coming over the top and connecting to an arm. This is the rod that actuates the wastegate, you should be able to move this part (towards the bulkhead - you'll need to grip it with some pliers or mole grips to move it). You will feel some resistance, this is normal but it should move reasonable freely.
If it doesn't move freely, then the wastegate will not be working correctly. Try spraying it with WD40 or GT85 maintenance spray if it feels stiff. It's pretty common for them to seize up and quite often they can be free'd off with a bit of trying (and a fair bit of WD40).
The intercooler hoses come from the intercooler, which is located behind the grill, it looks like this... maybe not as shiny or as large but it'll be the same...

The hoses coming from it will look something like this...

They are arranged like this...

One of the hoses might have come off, or the clamps sometimes work loose, they might be greasy inside, so the ends sometimes slip off under boost, check that there's no loose clips or hoses that have come off, if they have, then clean up any greasy ends and re-clip them back on. There might even be a split hose, just give them a check over.

If you pay for my return plane ticket to HK I'll come and sort it for you, I'll give your Landy a full valet too Rolling with laughter

I get those symptoms every 10K miles or so and had the last episode on the Easter weekend going to Convoy 4 Heroes. It was doing it on every uphill when towing my Sankey and again on the Saturday having a drive round locally. I pulled the pump out of the tank and with the action of draining it and just generally being disturbed must have shifted whatever crud was in it as it's been perfectly fine ever since.

Haha yes my Girlfriend was taking me to meet one of her friends from school and I noticed things were getting a bit.....Interesting. I pointed it out to her and she just laughed and said yea unfortunately there are a lot of "performers" in this area. I just thought they were being friendly Rolling Eyes

Hope I haven't got anyone in the Hong Kong Land Rover Club in trouble Laughing

Great city otherwise, definitely going back at some point in the future Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Mr. Green
I'm not able to check it yet, need some work out of H.K., can only be check the coming Saturday!
I think I'm going to buy a can of MAF sensor cleaner first and ready! Bow down

BTW...I need some instruction for install a new radio bezel, the last owner broke that thing while changing the antenna??
dont know how that related??
Can I just use something with 4 point insert the OEM radio and pull it out, then simply change the bezel...or its much more complicated? Neutral
I have order the new Bezel and retention wire, clips from UK, very expensive...with postage!
(what does that retention wire do??? use to hold up the whole radio weight??)
anyone would have some tips for that job?
Bow down

Update...I did unplug the MAF sensor and took a hilly ride today!

WOW...the power is back, so the problem is replace a new MAF sensor,
I believed the power will be more with new sensor, since the ECU only reading the air flow in a flat rate!

With cleaning that amount of oil out of the ecu I'd say that is where your power came back Ray

Not really...I did clean the oil (ECU) in the morning, then took a 50km ride on speedway and hilly, nothing change, no power...
worst when I lower one gear just as before, but the ride unplug the MAF sensor was really different, power is back! Mr. Green
