Hi all
Both SWAMBO & I have noticed a new noise when driving around yesterday - a soft but distinct 'clunk' when driving off. When we got home SWAMBO walked along the car while I tried to replicate it. It occurs almost every time I drive off from standstill in 1st gear, and SWAMBO says it sounds like it's coming from 'under the seats' - which probably means the transfer case. What could it be? |

Mkay, is this normal, or will it get progressively worse and then the propshaft ends up stuffing the transfer case and/or rear diff? |

lift the front axle and by hand turn the front output shaft: it should has a little backlash (like 5º). Do it with the unlocked TCase. Do the same with the rear output shaft.
Also check the the free play on both propshafts&diffs, in such case it should be around 45º. Apparently anything beyond those numbers will produce a clunk. I found out that when the clutch plate assy starts to go wrong then it causes all kind of noises on the driveline. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. I put mine into the dealer to have it attended to and they changed to roll bar rubbers. Driving away from their workshop the clunk was still there!
Where does the Loctite go? And what grade is best? Many thanks, Austen. Rover 12 1935 Rover 20 1940 Rover 100 1960 Defender TDC1 2008 FL2 TD4 2008 |

Austen, I'm not sure exactly what and where but there is definately a tech bulletin about it, a quick call to your dealer and they should be able to point you in the right direction! Loctite 271 would be my personal 'weapon of choice' as it has a 'strong' strength rating for larger applications and fasteners up to 1" If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! My 110 had the same issue. The first garage I brought it to said that they'd sort it... and didn't.
The next lot did sort it, but ended up replacing a few parts because they'd worn prematurely due to all the clunking and clanging. |

..... I did hear from a mech who was asked to fix a ‘clunk’ in a car that occurred when pulling away and when breaking – short fix as he removed the bowling ball from the boot… Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html
