All tdi discovery transfer boxes are 1:2 and have difflock. You only need worry about losing difflock if you get a transfer box from a TD5 Disco. I have a disco box in my 110 running 235/85 tyrres and I would never change it for a 1.4. I do a lot of towing too. I have no problem using low box to pull away on very steep hills with very heavy loads and changing to Hi-range on the fly and towing in 4th is actually better for the gearbox than in fifth. Mind you, my 110 is tweaked a little so it does go pretty well.

[quote="shaggydog"]What you doing with the old one?
![]() Mite sound a daft way of do this but if i can find out if both the disco 200 and defender 200 cylinder heads are the same i mite look for a disco 200 engine, drop it in the 90 as a defender engine, re build the defender engine and fit it as a disco engine when we get round to doing the chassis swap. i have got to do it this way as the 90 has to stay on the road give or take a couple of days for swapping everything over and stuff ![]() 1988 Defender 90 county 200tdi ( Beast ) Paul Walker 1973-2013 ( I Almost Had You ) |

I was looking for a little more top end, do not tow much. Road are straight and fast round here.

The heads are the same but the bell housings are different, the turbo positions and therefore front of exhausts are different and the plumbing at the front is different. I can totally understand your motivations to do so as I too need mine every day so every day off the road is a major issue but it may be worth for the sake of the amount of hassle paying extra for the Defender 200 as it will make the swap over much cheaper and easier, plus if you rebuild them both you will get a much better price for a genuine defender 200 than discovery. Yeah tbh i would rather rebuild the disco engine and then fit it to my truck as i don't really like the defender engine ( looks ) but i can't afford to have my son travelling all over the show with a tired engine so the soon i get a tempory engine the better, i know they both have there good points and bad points but i just prefer the disco look

Parts for defender 200tdi are getting hard to find. Was offered £1000 for my engine the other day. But then would have to find a replacement

Some bits are however I have never had any difficulty finding parts for it?
Most parts are still available from Land Rover, you just have to accept they are expensive but then again any classic car is. To be honest what is there to replace it with? Very few simple TDi engines around now as they all have some form of electronics or are too small. Yeah i think its more external parts that are getting thin on the ground really aspecially defender 200 stand a bit more of a chance with disco 200 bits i think

Yes think I will update the engine when my pockets are deep enough, but for now running OK. Part from no power steering this week, feel like Popeye
