Evening all. I noticed today that under the Rev counter on my 2.2 there is a low range symbol the same as most of the landrover range (should illuminate green I believe) so I slipped it into low range but it didn't light up. Probably shouldn't anyway but would be cool if it did/should but doesn't is that how it is? I'm guessing so

Although its function is mentioned in the 2.4 puma owners manual,it's not working..
The hi-low switch is on the transfer case,the black wire(mentioned in the workshop manual) is present on the instrument cluster plug,out of curiocity i took out the cluster and part-dismandled it and found out that there is a led missing on that spot,i hoped it would be an old-style bulb missing but soldering isn't my best talent.. |

the very early Pumas had the function enabled, we had quite a few launch vehicles that illuminated the low indicator when low was selected

So if. The wiring is present to the ipac then soldering in a green 5050 led might make it functional? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

But you must first remove the cluster transparent cover then the instruments' needles,the back facia with the graphics(rpm-mph etc) split the rest of the cluster case and then just solder a led,easyyyy
I thing Land Rover "forgot" this led on purpose,then they had to make warranty recalls for the transfer case hi-lo switch-top quallity,it's better not to have a low range indicator at all than to have it work intermintently |

There is no hi lo switch on the gearbox as far as I know . So not a lot of point mucking around with the dash part
Also why bother worrying about it when you can see lever position ( unlike diff lock ) and it's easy to tell as soon as you pull away |

On my transfer case there are 2 switches,the usual one for difflock(over the front output flange) and higher up on the transfer case(where the hi-lo cable-rod is connected),the hi-lo switch

Don't for goodness sake mess with it if there is nothing wrong with it in the first place.
If you do you'll propbbaly then end up with a problem for your efforts. |

There is a high/low switch on the transfer box, which is used to tell the ECM which throttle response map to use.
I think that LR assumes that you can tell if you're in low or high without an idiot light! An intriguing question I have posed before though is given that there is no transducer on the main gearbox to tell the ECM which gear you have selected, how does the ECM know to engage idle jack in the low range gears to which it applies (only 1st, 2nd, reverse IIRC)? Clever, eh! |

Idle jack is not only 1st low.
Certainly 1st low, also reverse low, and I think 2nd low. |

Hi Blackwolf,
I think the idle jack is initiated through a combination of the low range gearbox sensor and either ABS speed or speedo sensors. If you pop the vehicle into low range on a slope and leave the main box in neutral then roll forward slowly the revs rise. Roll too quickly and the revs drop back to normal idle speed. Try the same thing in high range and no increase in revs  |
