Ryan,
Land Rover recommend Castrol lubricants for the Defender. If you have access to the technical gurus - Would you provide a definitive answer to the points raised in this thread. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic34114.html Kind Regards 'Bert |

Ryan,
Just looked at the calendar and we are now into February and no response. Maybe Ryan has moved on? |

Still no response.... I could be wrong but I can only presume the question is being avoided as if the points being raised in that thread are true then I can't see Land Rover wanting to admit any liability in their dealers use of the incorrect spec oil. As it could be quite costly mistake for them!

Hi All,
Firstly I would like to apologise for the delay on the response. I will be temporarily addressing concerns on this forum and should you require any assistance please do not hesitate to PM me directly. In answer to the questions raised, for the 2015MY 2.2L Defender we recommend the use of Engine Oil that meets the SAE 5W-30 specification, as has been advised we do recommend the use of Castrol. While Land Rover do recommend Castrol, there are a number of alternative oils that are suitable, the specification recommended is 5W/30 WSS-M2C934/B and below are a few suggestions. Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Low SAPS Engine Oil (C1 equivalent) Mobil Super 3000 Formula C1 5W-30 Castrol EDGE Professional C1 5W-30 Hope this helps, Many thanks, Pete |

Pete
should all main dealers be using an oil to this specification? Is it a recommendation to them from you or an actual requirement? |

Personally I would never use Castrol no matter what JLR say, I know Castrol claim to be the world’s leading automotive oil producer but I prefer a company that specialises in oil and not the huge petrol chemical industry, that is why I only use Millers fully synthetic. OK it may be more expensive but in this life you get what you pay for. Oil is the life blood of the engine and while I am sure Castrol meets all the specifications it’s just too commercial for me, any oil company and Castrol included that makes supermarket oil or is to be found discounted in supermarkets is not for me.
And if you have an older Defender with a naturally aspirated engine then go for Morris’s Golden Film oil. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

It is a requirement that Land Rover retailers use the correct specification oil for the specific vehicle. Many thanks, Pete |

If you haven't already seen, there is a sticky in the Puma section which lists a load of WSS-M2C-934-B specification oils available;

Thanks again Pete
and x-isle for link. I had a minor panic as my invoice for the last servicing itemised Shell Helix Plus 5w/30; but I've just been out to the garage to check the labelling on the 1 litre top up bottle they left in the vehicle and it's actually the Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30. I guess they picked the wrong item on the invoice menu or it's just generic. |
