It has happened AGAIN !!!
You will never believe this, yes I know I do high mileage in my Defender but another oil pump failed.
I was cruising down the A23 from London heading for Littlehampton, slowed down for the roundabout to swing onto the link to the westbound A27 and oil light came on, straight on to the verge hazards on. Land Rover assist did not even bother sending a patrol just sent me the recovery truck from the AA. Very nice driver from the AA we had to wait for a lane closure so he could load me then down to Enterprise in Hove and up and running again in a Freelander 2. The 90 has been recovered back to Matfords in Exeter will be interesting to hear whats gone wrong this time.
Last time ... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic21042.html

Waiting on the verge of the slip road, bloody cold night

Very nice AA man to the rescue

Trying to cram as much of my stuff as I could into a poxy Freelander 2

if your talking oil pumps on the 2.2 then not too good compared to 2.4 !

I know someone who is having trouble with ford at the moment as they wont warrenty the new engine you get the warranty that is left on your old engine , so if you got 4 months warranty that's all he gets with new engine , so he is saying that the next one to fail he will have to pay
( not sure on exact details as only what I was told )

Noworries, how many miles are on the last engine/ pump did you do ? Also what servicing has it had since it's last repair.

I'm just trying to build up as much info as I can for my memory banks hence the questions.

I'm also trying to think of any common contributing factors that people's cars may share that are having these same problems.

Regards Pete.

Total engine failure seems to be getting more common on current motors. I have heard of a couple of Transit 2.2s failing.

Also I know of issues with the Mazda 6 2.2 (different engine) these seem to have loads of issues from oil contamination from the DPF regen cycle, leading to the oil pick up blocking and destroying the engine.

Response from the dealer that's 8 grand for a new engine.....no parts available, the car was worth about 6!

The way engines are going is rubbish, cams running direct in the head metal, no oversize pistons available etc, they really are becoming disposable.

I'm aware of some Audi "S" car where the engine became generally tired at about 80K, again not repairable and a suggested bill of about 14K for replacement. At this rate cars are going to be worthless out of warranty!

Jonno. These are some of my thoughts also. DPF doing its regen contaminating the oil upto from memory 7% (calculated) of diesel quantity before the light comes one. And that is only if the ecus calculation estimation is any where correct.

I'm already seeing an upside to dpf removal albeit illegal in the UK to drive a car without it if it left the factory fitted with it.

I personally feel the Defender with DPF should be oil serviced a lot lot more often with the exact correct grade oil than Landrover or Ford advise to at least help with engine longevity

Pete.

Good Afternoon Pete,

My Defenders have been religiously main dealer serviced at Matfords Exeter every 12,000miles.
The first oil pump/ engine failed at 34thousand miles just before its 36thou service and Friday night it was on 130thou and guess what just about to go in for its 132thou service and mot ect.
The first time I was doing 100kmh 63mph on a French A road. Friday I was slowing down through the gears to take a roundabout slip road approx. 45/50 mph in 5th gear.

I hope this helps

My first 2.4 engine died from an oil pressure relief valve failing it filled the top of the engine up with oil and hydrauliced blew oil every where, manifold went on fire the lot. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I have just seen your comments re dpf regeneration, mine sits in London traffic a lot and also when escorting cranes at 40/50mph the engine is not getting hot / working very hard so mine regenerates a lot. Also mine pulls heavy trailers then it gets a good hard workout, always feels better when you take the trailer off. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Thank you noworries.

So I'm clear as can be. No extra servicing was ever done.
And only the factory recommended 12k servicing intervals at the main dealers who we assume are using the correct oil. ?

This will be interesting to compare to other failures on the service times as it may be a common factor on the failing cars.

Also worth considering is how do the dealer prime the system after oil and filter changed ? Do they just crank it over until it starts and wait for the filter to fill up and the light go out ?

Pete.

Absolutely Pete,

The Mazda is question had been serviced about every 8-10K miles, it had done about 60K from memory when the engine went. On dismantling the oil pick up was found to be totally covered in sludge and carbon.

It was eventually got going with a "used" engine from an outfit Manchester way, this had a knock from when fitted and turned out to have an oil jet missing so obviously messed about with.

I believe this car was traded in as a dead loss.

Just a depressing scenario when engines can't be remanufactured, either due to plated bores, shell less cams and too thin cast cylinder walls.

If I had a motor with dpf I think I'd be using a moderate cost oil and dropping it every 4k....

Again it needn't be this way I believe some early dpf engines had a extra injector in the exhaust to regen the dpf rather than just using the main injectors on the exhaust stroke, causing oil dillution.

Thank another good interesting point.

Do you allow the engine to idel a little after towing or hard work before switching it off ?

with the 2.2 its oil pump mechanical failure not oil pressure failure ( pump fails then you loss pressure )

I don't think the diesel from regen is too blame ( but do agree it cant be a good thing )

there is a revised pump (time will tell ) , but how long these will take to get in all engines due to engine stock levels don't know

Some of the ford 2.2 do have the diesel feed into the dpf for use on a regen. I'll have to check my Ranger when I get back next week and see if the same on that.

Like you say at least 6k mile services intervals or less for hard working cars I feel is a must for longevity or something not under warranty.
