yep that's right

the pedal stops (the bolts on the back and front of pedal box ) adjust the amount the pedal moves so when pedal is up its not pulling on the pistons rod in the cyl and when pedal is down your not pushing the rod in to far in to cyl , having either or both wrong will damage the cyl internals

the adjusting nuts on the piston rod just adjust the rod into the right place , so the rod has just a small amount of play before pushing the cyl rod and keeping a free flow of fluid between slave and master when pedal is up

if the rod is adjusted wrong like a bit of pressure on the rod it stops the free flow of fluid causing clutch slip as it clutch plate wears or as fluid warms up (expands) the clutch would slip as well

Just been out for an hour messing with my rod.

It's now a little longer if that's the way to describe it?

Basically the pedal now attaches to the rod further away from the master cylinder.....looking forward to a wee drive tomorrow see what effect (if any) it may have?

I know you have altered it , BUT was it wrong in the first place ?

we had one in the other day told to fit a clutch , came in via another garage , so didn't know any history or faults , fitted new clutch , bleeding clutch and checking over found pedal didn't feel right , checked master adjusted wrong , re adjusted right

owner picked it up , said he had fitted 3 new masters all started leaking after a while , so it must be the clutch going .

cost him a clutch he didn't really need ( a case of a little knowledge is dangerous to the wallet )

shame I didn't drive it in , may have noticed it before fitting new clutch and saved him the money

Honest answer to your question being - I don't know.

As mentioned above I've got intermittent clutch rattle so could be clutch. I also from time to get the feeling that the clutch isn't being depressed enough and then there's the on/off sensation of the clutch ie go to move off and it's a sudden clunk and we're off?

I'm of the opinion it's a new clutch that's needed but figured tinkering with the clutch pedal / master cylinder first might just save me some money?

Just as well I'm working now to try and pay the bill.

I can't say for sure but with the exception of user error I don't appear to have had the issue of the clutch suddenly taking up (ie the on/off effect).

on the down side I would say the clutch now sounds more rattley than prior to me adjust the actuator rod. that said it's as before intermittent but I'd say it's more rattley and more of the time. Sad

could it mean the only answer is a new clutch?

What would cause the clutch to drag...ie not fully disengage?

oil on clutch plate ( can make it slip or drag )

Can't possibly imagine it being the rod poorly adjusted Whistle

In layman terms how would oil cause the clutch to drag?

Slip I can understand but not drag.....

Also when the actuator rod /pedal position was adjusted I'm sure that the pedal position stayed where it was and the rod moved not the other way round ie pedal from floor measurement didn't change...will check later?

?

the pedal postison may not have moved , but you moved the rod in the pedal

might not be getting full movement on the rod now

That's the crazy things.... I was encouraged to move the rod to try and ensure that the clutch was getting max movement because it felt like the clutch wasn't fully disengaging but it seems to be getting worse ie disengaging less and less?

Maybe you're getting air in clutch hydraulics

Does pedal feel spongy?

This was my experience with my clutch sometime ago.
Basically I bled the system until old clutch fluid was replaced. I drove since then about 1500km. No problem yet.

PS: Clutch was replaced under warranty about 77000km ago and the vehicle is now on about 135000km 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.8i

Clutch has pretty much always felt the same (heavy) / normal I guess.

It seems a bit like there's no moment in the gear box to get a smooth gear change like the synchro isn't working but I hope that's me worrying and it's a simple case of the hydraulics not working....hopefully just air?

I'll see if mate can have a look later?
