Engine oil / viscosity question...

Not really to do with my Defender - but I have a service today on my wife's Shogun (groan - I know).
We've not had it long and it needed a good going over, which they did, no problem.

They left me a small amount of oil for topping up - which was 15/40w - the manual and websites I've looked at say it specifies 5/30w - is the 15/40w going to be a problem? If so i'll ask them to drop it.

Given the alleged delicate nature of mitsubishi engines I would be wanting the oil to be as specified in the manual. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

You wont get such good cold oil/engine protection with 15W/40 as you would 5W/30, but warm conditions the 15W/40 will be better.

The first number is cold rating. so the lower the better, second is the hot rating, so higher the better

0W/40 would be the ideal oil but it costs an absolute fortune!

also check the ACEA rating make sure it's compatable with Mitsibishi's spec. Simply B1 or C3 etc is good enough, no need to review entire spec

Anyway, as said, I wouldn't be happy with a 15W if Mitsibishi clarify 5W .. take it back Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

manufacturer might list one oil , but autodata ( which most garages use ) , may list 5 different oils depending on temp/use etc

put exact model , year , engine etc and I will have a look

or reg by message

Great, it's a 2007, the newer model, 118kw (160bhp) 3.2 with a DPF. It's the current shape, they changed it in 2007.

reg wont go in , so done manually, 06 on , 3.2 with dpf

there is a 15/40 listed for -15 degrees up as long as its c1,2 or 3 and low ash

there are 8 different oils listed

I bet they have used a semi synthetic 15/40 as its cheap as chips!!

When I purchased my wifes Audi the garage serviced the vehicle and put in 15/40 semi, I let it go for a couple of thousand miles then put in the correct oil fully syn 5/30 A3/B3.

Thanks for the replies folks.
Just got back from the garage as my 90 needed an MOT.
They have made some enquiries to the motor factors and oil manufacturer, they are going to drop the oil, do an engine flush and fill with 5w30. FOC of course. They said sorry and that the motor factors had agreed the oil was the wrong type and that they are supplying new oil, flush etc for the garage.
At least no harms been done in the last couple of days.
