Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
WD-40 or ACF50 ?
One of the little switches which trigger the interior lights when you open one of the 5 doors did not work properly this morning. A couple of pushes by hand solved it. Now, is it a good idea to hand-push them in and spray either a bit of WD-40 or ACF40 onto it, and then push several times in and out to lubricate and keep it all working smoothly?
Which is best of those two for that, WD-40 or ACF50? Or is there better than those?

Though from both the exact formulation is secret, the they both consist of hydrogenated naphta components, mineral oils and some other ingredients. As the name says, WD40 is used primary as a water repellent (WD40: Water Displacing spray, 40th attempt). I think ACF would have more use as a general lubricant than WD40, also it is safe for plastics and rubber, therefore I think it is better to use ACF50 for this specific application. Cheers, Vincent

I have banished the dreaded 40 from my tool box and only ever use ACF50 now... Thumbs Up

Unlike 40, the ACF50 seems to dry without getting sticky, whilst remaining totally effective at repelling moisture for many weeks and months, depending on location... Mr. Green

It is also safe and recommended for vehicle electrics too, as well as numerous other purposes... Whistle

WD40 still has a place in my shed - great solvent for removing tar and sticky stuff as well as freeing off seized parts. Never use it for lubricating parts where you want a long lasting solution and detest its use in locks!

One thing in favor of WD-40 where I use it regularly with apparent success... When the truck had its 3 years corrosion inspection it appeared that the inside of the 12N towing electrics plug was badly corroded from moisture ingress, even if I had never used it. (That's why we found out after 3 years only)
Dealer replaced it by a new one under warranty, and at that time I also let them install the 12S plug. Since then I spray the inside of both about twice monthly liberally with WD-40, and now another 3.5 years later both plugs remain shiny as new at the inside. So WD-40 has something going for itself. Thumbs Up

Time to spray the door hinges with ACF50 again now that I think of it. Whistle

I use copious amounts of acid free vaseline (petroleum jelly) on in the inside of the towing plug, and other connectors and lamp sockets. Works very well. Thumbs Up Cheers, Vincent

I think you will find that ACF50 will do a much better job of that for you Eric... Thumbs Up

I only have to do my towing electrics socket with ACF every couple of months, inside and out... Whistle

And, you do not have to worry about dust and grit sticking to it either... Wink

++1 for ACF-50
I started with ACF50 about a 6 months ago on my new Defender, but now use it on everything that is made of metal, rubber, plastic etc anywhere that needs something 'oily'. The stuff is amazing, stays on a long time, doesn't pick up much dirt, penetrates better than makes sense for something that thick, and while not cheap is way cheaper than replacing steel! I've been working on cars for 30+ years and it was an emotional journey to leave my beloved WD40 behind, but leave it I have. Buy it now and never give rust another thought!
