MY2011/2012 Recall Action P047/048 Front Axle Case
A quick heads-up to all, I found this whilst browsing through Topix.

Following some failures of the weld at the flange to case joint on the front axle Landrover have issued the above recall actions.
Depending on the affected VIN either the axle case will either be replaced or retaining brackets fitted which are supposed to stop the hub and swivel assembly becoming too detached from the vehicle if the weld does break Confused

P047 Recall Action
P047 Service Instruction
P048 Recall Action
P048 Service Instruction
P047/048 Q & A

Who's going to be the first to get a letter?

The labour times look a bit tight.
As for the second recall option, won`t it just cover up the suspect weld / joint and allow muck and rubbish to collect thus corrode the axle section it`s protecting.

On the bright side it does ent list 90 models. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

I would think that you are as yours falls in the LD400023 - LD408691 range. Often when quoting chassis numbers for campaigns Land Rover specify the chassis no. range prefixed with the model code, in this case, LD - Defender. Other times they include the year identifier, in your case (and mine) BA.

If you register with Topix at https://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/ (free to register) then login and enter your full VIN in the vehicle finder it will show any outstanding recalls.

Labour times on these things are always ludicrous but are not quite what they seem. They are actually the hours that Landrover pays the dealer for doing the work, and are usually arrived at by a theoretical time-and-motion analysis of a clean new vehicle already located in an ideal workshop etc. Although possibly achievable under ideal conditions they are seldom realistic in the real world.

If LR says the repair takes say 5 man-hours, then that's what the dealer is paid, even if it actually took twice that to do.

The dealers aren't happy, but it's how the system works (for all makes not just LR).

Thanks, yes I had a look and something flagged up that said I need to get this sorted, what do I just contact a dealer? I can't do anything yet until the smashed wing is replaced mind you... 2011 110 USW

Would like to see what the reinforcement bracket looks like - the service instruction photos are quite poor.

I also wonder if they are available separately as a form of additional axle support?

It's strange why only 110s and 130s are covered. I always thought the front axle casings were the same.

Maybe they figure the 90s have less load on them so they "should" be ok. it would be good to know if 90s are definitely not in scope for problems though.

I wondered the same thing, but I suppose that it is just possible that there was one bad batch and LR knows exactly where it went. It is more likely I think that it is a load-related assumption.

It cracks me up though reading the Q&A section. The problem, in case you haven't read all the OP's attachments, is that the LH front swivel hub, complete with wheel, hub, brake, swivel housing, etc shears off the end of the axle and disappears into the wheelarch or possibly hedge. This, says LR, "may reduce stability and increase the risk of an accident"! Something of an understatement, I feel!

Axle Recall
Am I the only one that think this is poor, there is obviously a fault with the welds on the axle casing and they are going to fit a bracket so if it does break off it wont disappear up the road and you might be able to stop (assuming your not doing 70 on the motorway, and then I assume it would take quite a lot to t cut out the damage caused by flipping end over end 5 times)

Surely anyone else wouldn't get away with having a known faulty part but fitting restraining strap just in case?

I am going to chase the up for a new axle , should be fun?
