It's definitely not the gearstick rattle as I've previously sorted that and it's much louder than that. It's also not the turbo heat shield as I've checked that but need to get underneath but I'm hoping to come up with a list of areas to check from the ever helpful members of this forum. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold)
Looking for another to replace it. The road less travelled.... is a muddy one! |

I have a somewhat similar rattle which I thought might be heatshield, but then I found by means of "the elbow test" whilst lying underneath that it is the bracket holding the front offside mudflap to the chassis.

Hi Gentlemen,
Just found the Steering Damper dust cover loose, rattling and rubbing on the inner housing. Hope to have it replaced under Warrantee. Regards Lesdef |

I've potentially found the problem. Topping up various fluids just now and I found that the red eye at the back of the engine was loose. I've tightened the 2 bolts up so I'll see later whether that has cured the rattling.
Thanks everyone for your help. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold) Looking for another to replace it. The road less travelled.... is a muddy one! |

Right a couple days have passed and the loose lifting eye in the engine bay was not the issue. I've booked it in for a service next Friday so I'm asking them to remove the prop and check the UJ's. Hopefully they'll sort the oil leak from the oil filter as well. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold)

Right so the truck was serviced and a rather long list of faults were rectified including corroded brake lines, new front pads and discs, N/S front CV joint amongst other things. They looked at the UJs and greased them all but found no excess wear or play. On the road test the wind speed was gusting upto 65mph so was impossible to hear the rattling. They're going to have another look but I'm hoping you guys might be able to suggest possible culprits.
So far ruled out: Gearstick rattle (already been fixed) Heat Shields UJ's Loose Brake pads And the main symptons are: Rattling under acceleration (more pronounced going uphill) Scanguage reports water temperature increases to 96-98 degrees 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold) Looking for another to replace it. I assume it's not a rattle from the engine?

Is it like a "pinking" noise you would get on a petrol engine ? 2005 Td5 90 XS

Water temperature is fine. Could it be either the upper or lower heatshield on your catalytic convertor? My turbo one also rattled but this was due to a tear in it, difficult to see and determine and not due to the bolts being loose. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I've also had rattly heat shield on crankcase sensor (on bell housing behind cat) and now I've got rattling from transfer box mount heat shield (beneath drivers feet)

I had a similar sound. It was the front low attachment of the damper which was unclamped and the damper shaft was rubbing on the fixing hole which was no longer round. Once tightened, no noise
