if when stationary with engine running at idle and clutch pedal released its noisy, but with clutch pedal pressed its quiet its most likely the clutch plate springs, see post re my similar noise

As I complained about drivetrain play before my waranty ended, I hope they will solve it under warranty.
To be continued... |

Sounds a bit like the issue I had recently, mine was more of a whopping noise. Could be heard at low speeds when rolling in gear, went when the clutch was pressed down.
It was diagnosed as excessive wear in the splined section that connects the main shaft to the transfer box, and interestingly, since it was fixed there is less backlash in the transmission. Good luck Tony |

I think it is something else as the whining is rev based, no matter if I'm standing still or driving, in or out of gear, clutch in or out. What can it be?

Sounds more clutch related then. The noise I had was road speed dependant.

that being the case it must be something that rotates all the time with the engine. have you had a listen under the bonnet to see if its coming from the front or rear of the engine, left or right side. A long screwdriver pressed to various metal parts of the engine and then placed by an ear will often locate the source of rumbles and knocks DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Sounds like the whining when you drive in reverse.

The whining in reverse is because the gears used for reverse in most boxes are straight cut and not helical cut , sorry I know this doesnt help ,
but do you get the whining noise then stationery and foot on clutch |

Yes. If the engine revs the noise follows, regardless if I'm moving or not.
Sounds like this: |

It's a pully or what's it called?
A wheel that is driven by a rubber belt driven by the engine. |
