Worth rebuilding the starter motor ?
Hi guys - popping in for a friend again Embarassed

Popped round to see his 2000 90 TD5 as he was having intermittant non start issues.

When it does not start there is just a loud clonk noise from the starter motor so im assuning it having internal issues.

Its getting a solid battery voltage to the main stud and hitting it with a hammer seems to have no effect.

Thought id try and undo the 13mm nut to clean the connections up but seems that the stud all the wires mount to wants to trun on its own and guessing it should not do this. Having done this it then started everytime so guessing this is the issue rather than the starter itself ?

If so is it something that can be fixed ? I get the feeling that trying to undo the nut fully will either snal the stud off or its just going to spin so something will need cutting off Sad

Is it a replaceable part and has anyone delt with this before as we would rather have a plan of attack rather than break it and then decide what to do Laughing

There's a kit on ebay which is easy to fit and reasonably cheap. Try a search for defender starter motor repair kit.

If you get hold of the kit to repair the solonoid it will become clear. The last time I did mine it took longer to get the starter off than swopping over the contacts. IIRC you could do it whilst still fixed to the motor, you can get into quite a comfortable position sat under there.

I dont thin its the contacts causing this issue though - its more the loose 12v stud that shouldnt move and dont know if thats fixable !

The study is one of the contacts inside, it is shaped inside to match up with the contact on the plunger. A quick way to see is to take off the cover off the solenoid but disconnect the battery first.

I have done lots of the same style of starter as there fitted to lots of rovers etc , and always just replaced the contacts and never had a problem with one even had people say its the best its ever been at starting

with the first few I done we had to make the contacts out of copper sheet as you could buy them on there own back then

there are a few different style of contact , I think they all fit but some are a bit more heavy duty (wider contact area )

I had the same problem. I bought the kit off ebay. The hardest part was undoing the 3 bolts that hold the starter motor on.

Starts first time now and will hopefully do so for the next 11 years or so Smile

Ta for all the advice Smile

After running through it all with him speed was of the essence as he was losing money daily due to it not starting at all now.

He managed to collect a new starter from Devon4x4 so thats been fitted and we will rebuild the old one and keep as a spare when we have some spare time Smile

Good stuff. FYI I find the 15mm nut on the top of the starter mounting far easier to get at lying over the top of the engine with a spanner. Might be of use to someone. Far easier than trying to fight with it from underneath with a menagerie of sockets and extensions.......
