Well over the last couple of weeks the Defender has developed a whooshing noise from the transmission at low speed. It is a rotating sound, a bit like the handbrake just making contact.
It has also developed a vibration when braking hard. Anyway, went in for a service today, just been phoned, sounds serious, the warranty guy from Land Rover is inspecting the vehicle in the morning. Any known problems? Thanks Tony PS 2.4 with 16000 miles on the clock Last edited by Alicat on 31st Oct 2014 3:10pm. Edited 2 times in total |

Could it be something to do with traction control?

So the diagnosis is gearbox main shaft wear!
Now waiting for it to be repaired. Tony |

Just picking the Defender up. The problem is the splined connection between the main and transfer box. This was badly worn, but had not got to the point of failure.
Same problem that has been discussed on here before. Tony |

Yes, made the gearbox leak - gone back today!
Joking aside, they have dropped the transfer box and replaced the splined shaft that connects the main box to the transfer box. I saw an exploded view of the gearbox in another post and I am led to believe it was the short splined shaft. Tony |
