The VCV amongts other things can cause many running problems from rough idle, to noisy sounding injection to the engine not starting at all.
As seen they are easy to fit but do need coding in after being fitted, in some cases the old one can be re learned and it can help with running issues. I do advise when doing the learn that the engine is hot. We have found some old valves will not code in correctly until the engine is really really hot and from that we found eveutually they fail so this could be an early indication they are failing ? |

Yes, I did think that my symptoms may be those of a defective valve, despite being brand new less than a year ago from a Ford dealer!
Erratic running but with no fault codes generally seems symptomatic on the Puma of a VCV fault. Most other fuel system issues seem to generate DTCs, at least on the HP side. |

so Pete, i guess i should do the vcv swap with a cold engine then run it up to really hot then code it? rather than do the exchange with a piping hot engine??
thankyou |

oh well that was a waste, changed the vcv, went for a thrash to get it hot then tried to learn pilot,,, same result, 0x50 failed. When i removed the inlet manifold to gain access
I did see that the engine was extremely oily and cokey in the inlet manifold and inlet ports, this is likely what is stopping the turbo actuator arm from having full range and giving the idle dynamic turbo test fail. guess this could also cause a fail in the pilot learn??? I am thinking seriuosly of getting a terraclean, its 110 quid and should help with the turbo and injectors. i will report back. see photos for carbonisation any other suggestions gratefully received Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

that's not as bad as some ive seen
good ole egr valves maybe be good for lowering emissions but this this what you get ! amazing when you think how fussy people are about servicing they cars , replacing air filter when you got the egr putting all this cr@p in your engine |

Yes on the way to the pub i was trying to fathom how it got so bad as it should be fresh air and figured it must be turbo oil seals but of course its EGR. crap.

Had Terraclean. Maybe engine is a little quieter, probably just wishful thinking.
Tried to do another pilot learn, failed with a 0x58 message, adjustments too extreme or somesuch then another fail 0x50 as before, in start mode or something. did another dynamic turbo air pipe test, failed again at idle test, actuator arm not moving as expected or something like that. I hope someone is gaining something from this info as I am almost at the point of dumping the car altogether. Am going to order a bottle of forte turbo clean and run that through to try to eliminate the air test fail, Get car saleable then sell it. Having read all the relevant transit posts as well as the defender posts it seems this engine is extremely prone to fuelling issues with a multitude of possible causes and fixes. JLR SDD has not impressed me either, coming from BMW ISIS. |

Thought I'd let everyone now the outcome. after the terraclean I ran a bottle of Forte diesel turbo cleaner in 35 litres of fuel. This improved the sound somewhat but the clatter was still there.
I was then able to successfully do a "pilot learn" in SDS, something that was not possible before. The engine note changed and the clatter was gone. The engine now sounds exactly as it should and i consider the problem solved. Hopefully this post helps others. |

in other words i think the turbo cleaner did clean the vanes inside the turbo and the induction side of the engine so that the computer "saw" the engine running within limits and then allowed the pilot learn to take place. prior to the forte turbo cleaner and/or the VCV replacement the engine was so "dirty/ out of spec" the software would not allow the pilot learn to take place.
