I bought one of these.....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HEAVY-DUTY-HYDRA...329wt_1197 It has given me excellent service for three years. It also has a thermal cut out to prevent motor overload. I personally wouldn't go for anything less than a 10 ton capacity. Using a hardwood short piece you can increase effectiveness and reach by placing it between the ram and the log you are splitting. Do not let anyone stand in front of the ram as logs can be 'fired out' if difficult to split and they eventually let go. It's reliable and hydraulic.
You get what you pay for. I would happily pay extra to save swinging an axe 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

Have to agree that is what I bought. Although these days I find it cheap to by my logs by the ton or in a dumpy bag kiln dried. Rather than get the trailer out and go log hunting, then spliting, then drying. |

I bought the scheppach from screwfix. It has served me well but has had to be repaired a number of times, mainly due to weak sliders holding the head of the ram in place. I have also had to re weld the head onto the ram as the welds cracked.
All that said, it was cheap and spends all it's life outside under a lean to. 2002 110 td5 |

never had the Clarke splitter ( got tractor mounted one ) , but did look at one in a shop few years back with the view of splitting lighting wood and other stuff that may have been still bit too big after tractor splitter and the bloke in the shop who we knew well said don't bother as we get nearly all them back broke
BUT this was a few years back so maybe better now and maybe they were overloading them |
