Just a thought - if you're sucking in all that air, you might consider upgrading your intake, especially if you have an RAI. There are some unobtrusive options available. The tuners will give you advice Smile Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Alternatively you could just get the largest hole cutter you can and chisel yourself another inlet. Wing sounds favourite to me.

Sounds like a visit to a rolling road and a bit of time fully testing the engine, you may need a custom remap. Does seem a bit odd. Bigger turbo and black smoke, you would have thought that if peak boost pressure reached the ecu would shut the turbo down / reduce the fuelling.
Or over boost code logged ? due to larger turbo. I wonder if they fitted oversized fuel injectors, that would be impressive

Either way induction and exhaust system upgrades may well be required, I wonder what boost pressures it`s running at, the exhaust gas temperatures along with coolant temps, oil temps when it`s going flat out.
Has anyone fitted a resistor in series to the boost pressure sensor / coolant temp sensor to fool the ecu, we used to do this years ago, it was a quick and cheap job. Thankfully things have moved on some what.

All the best let us know how it goes. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

you cant see the injector base as its inside the cam cover , also tdci injector are in oil so any cr@p would get washed away , never seen a injector washer gone on a tdci transit or defender (also Mondeo ,jag, fiat never seen one go ) and seen them fitted back with secondhand washers and still seem ok !

Yep it`s along way down.

The only time I`ve had a leak from an injector is when the top oil seal popped out of the rocker cover on a ldv convoy (same engine ). You get oil everywhere, that was due to excessive crank case compression.

Never had a lower seal / copper washer leak yet, if it did the cylinder would fill with oil very quickly when switched off.
But I`ve had a few crack and blow holes in pistons, due to poor spray pattern and poor running. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

The only way I'm going to establish the exact cause is to stick it on a rolling road and link it up to the diagnostic system for feed back. I didn't really want to start modding my Landy but I now find myself comparing the prices of ITG filters and Intercoolers prior to any future remap installation.

The fuel system is something that still concerns me but things will be more apparent on the RR. I missed Pete at BAS today but I'll be phoning him tomorrow for a chat regarding the way forward.

Thanks guys - you've all been really great in helping me establish the root cause.

I have been reading this thread regarding EGRs and tomorrow I'm going to unplug mine and see if there is any reduction to the black smoke with the EGR valve 100% closed. I know full well after my recent EGR removal session that my valve closes fully after the engine is switched off so here goes - I'll report back tomorrow PM.

Strange that as I have done 3 sets in the last 2 months on defenders, easiest way to tell if they're leaking is pull the oil cap off or the breather pipe out of the intake tube when engine is running. The last one was chuffing away like a steam train when the cap was removed. The job itself is pretty easy but the cleaning of the injector tubes/seats in the head is a pain to do properly. Was chatting to a technical guy at autologic earlier on in the year and he said they've had numerous reports of injector washer failures on the 2.4 defender
