I have an '07 model and don't recognise this symptom - although because I bought it 2nd hand, the previous owner may have had it fixed?

Thanks mate.

This is really giving me hope.

Once the vehicle broke down at my work. Nice man came from LR Assist after he sorted the problem on his laptop I asked him to give it a try accross the yard. I told him the symptons and off he went, after nearly hitting one of our 80t trailers he gave me the keys back and said..... "I don't care what the dealers have told you, that ain't right". He even put it in his breakdown report and then had it recovered as he said it was not safe to drive. Not that it did any good Rolling Eyes

That sounds very wrong - and scary!
With the cramped driving position (I'm long of leg) it's hard enough going quickly from gas to brake - I'd definately notice if the revs were picking up (or not dropping) as I do this, and I can say they drop more-or-less just like any other car I've driven. The characteristics are indeed different, but nothing that driving for a few hundred miles didn't allow me to adapt to...

I have sort of got used to it but it still catches me out in traffic now and then Shocked . If it can be fixed then I hope my mpg will also improve?

Can't think that fixing it would make mpgs any worse... it should involve cutting the fuel a tiny bit quicker.
Might not be enough to notice though.
You've probably read the mpg thread - and have an idea of what you should be getting, depending on your driving style and loads? I'm still averaging 30, with very mixed length, lightly-laden journeys - this kind of tells me everything is probably working as it should!

Yes mate read that with great interest. The first six months it was quite good around the 27 mark with the roof rack ect but since I have been having all the problems I stuggle to get more than 24 on motorways (65mph) and other driving gets around 18-21. I do want to have more work done to it but I don't want to spend any more money until it is right.

I'd agree that 27 with a rack sounds about right - especially with some etcs!

But 18 to 21 doesn't seem right - I used to get that with my V8 90.
I suppose with a laden rack, and maybe towing, with a headwind, but not just normal stuff.

It's a tricky one, especially when your garage is telling you there's nothing wrong!
I don't know what to say, other than to try 2nd opinions (from independants). It's all money though. Confused
But if you get back up to 27+ I suppose you'll recoup some in the long run.

My hope is that this guy from Lodge Lane will have more knowledge than the dealer technicians and be able to identify the problems, and even fix them. My worry is that if it is a problem LR know about but can’t fix then I am in for more waffle!!!

I have this problem as well, and my 08 Defender was becoming un-drivable, I checked the switch on the clutch master cylinder and discovered it had failed open.
After an LR assistance Technician "linked out " the connector to the clutch switch closing the circuit it drove fine no run on at-all,I booked the car in at the local Main Stealer for a new clutch switch.
I've had the car back for 3 days now and although not as bad, the engine still runs on a bit when changing up or down a gear causing a lot of noise from the transmission when changing up.
The LR bumph on the clutch switch is that it is used to activate "surge damping"by stopping the engine speed rising dramatically, giving a smoother gear change.
The operation of this switch is normally open- (open circuit when clutch is at rest) and closes when you depress the clutch.
I would be interested if linking out this switch affects the engine power/torque as well, I couldn't really notice it.

I prefer driving my TDCi with the surge damping disabled (connector linked with jump wire).
But I shall leave it as LR intended to avoid any Guarantee problems,although one of my neighbours has decided to run his with the switch linked out.
I also have a 2004 TD5 Defender 90, this has the surge damping as well but it actually works and doesn't over rev when changing up.

Well I took the Red Dwarf into my dealers with this overrun problem. I came back fixed Thumbs Up Oh hang on the overrun issue was sorted. I will ask my dealer what they did.
