The heater is separate.
The bit you hit your knees on only does cooling, the heating is controlled by the levers round the dash. On the left you've got the fan controls, on the right you've got controls for where the air goes and how hot it is. |

Yes. Air con and heater are two completely different things.

You can't have the heater on at the same time as the A/C inna Defender, really??The only useful thing about a/c inna td5 is demisting the windows....so I thort, lol. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

On a td5 the aircon, a stand-alone unit, will only cool the air. You can run heater and aircon (on lowest setting), to help dry the air.
Tdci you can have hot air conditioned air. |

A bit off-topic perhaps (my car came without user manual), but: are there any setting combinations on the aircon dials I should avoid? E.g. having the 'blower' dial on position I and the 'cooler' dial on III? Or even the cooler on MAX whilst the blower is turned off? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

I usually leave the ac on fan position 1 all year round, and the cooling power on 3 in summer, 1 in winter. you can turn off the dash vents. There are enough gaps around the system to allow it to dry the air without causing a draft! Its a basic and primitive system, but it works well on my 90. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Thanks for that Gareth, my dash vents don't do much anyway as my blower is quite anemic (for which I opened a separate topic). Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000
