not 100% sure yet! as i have had a few teething probs after going back together. it HAS been losing water,BUT!! i discovered a rad hose not fully tightened and dripping! and it HAS been smoking BUT! this time it is dirty grey smoke, and discovered a leak-off banjo had worked loose allowing air in and out!. Also not done enough miles yet to say for def if its cured it, but it is looking good so far!! My 109 thread

Argggggggggg head gotta come off again!!!
so one of the on going niggles was the booming noise at certain revs, been through everything possible and it looks like its a Valve related issue. either play in tappets, bent rod, wear on rocker, bent valve, sticky valve, non sealing valve or weak valve spring!! phew. to top it off whilst driving home last night noticed at traffic lights plumes of steam from exhaust again!! so i have a spare head, im gonna put on this week. but this time before head goes on i will check for any play in cam followers and replace if necessary. not going to expense of replacing any other components on new replacement head just gonna hope its ok. if not then i will have to bite the bullet and buy a new head!! 360 quid i aint got!! sounds like you having as much fun as I was when my cam shaft key way chipped and my truck was off the road for about 3 months wile I was waiting for time to get it all back together. with your replacement head it might be worth getting a valve spring compressor and dropping all the valves out and changing the valve stem seals and regrinding and seating the valves back into the read, that way you can eliminate sticky valves ets.

injectors is what im thinking. dont think its the injectors themselves though. have to fess up to something!!!
as i was tightening number 2 injector retaining nut the stud snapped! even though i was using recommended torque! luckily i had a spare injector stud. when i put it in im nor sure the stud went all way in!! i dropped injector in and tightened it all up. im hoping this may be causing the injector not to seal properly!! you say its not injectors but is the injector injecting as just because its getting diesel doesn't mean its working
I take it no3 was getting diesel ? if so swap say no2 and no3 injectors and check if missing moves to no2 , that should rule out injector and if injection pump is giving pressure to no 3 if no2 misses then got to be injector if no3 still misses its got to be either injection pump not giving pressure to no3 or valves then you need to do a compression check or better cylinder leakage check cyl leakage check will tell you if its valves and which one (in or ex ) and if its piston problem on dodgy injector check small spill return pipe to sure diesel isn't just passing through , should only get a small amount from return pipe , maybe worth checking against one of the other injector BE CAREFUL WHEN WORKING ON INJECTORS , AS THE HIGH PRESSURE CAN INJECT THROUGH YOUR SKIN |
