long standing issue with coolant loss and white smokey zorst.
decided to take the head off to investigate as everyone seemed to be pointing to gasket failure. now when i removed the intercooler to inlet pipe it was quite wet in there! couldnt tell if it wasa coolant but it was definitely more than just oil! so when the rocker cover came off, there was a fair bit of coolant in the rocker!!! anyhoo head is now off and the gasket looks fine! zort ports are nice and sooty so coolant not been washing down them. here are some pics, no cleaning has been done, pics taken as things came off!! Coolant and oil can also mix in the radiator, if there is a split between the water and oil sections.

actually yea it chucked it down a few days ago! lol
oil looks perfect! can the coolant make it's way up the valves? ive been informed by someone in the know that cylinder 4 is passing gas !! fire ring should be clean all way round! so im gonna clean surfaces check tolerances for warping and bung it back on!! im hoping this might also be my booming sound under load! if you get it faced , make sure they take the minimum off
some places will just set machine to surface say 5-10 thou first cut to save time get them to do cut 2 thou first cut or less that's if it needs it , if it has not got hot it may be ok |

so today was cleaning and prepping surfaces and checking head for warping.
thankfully after a thorough going over with the feeler guauges, the head is NOT warped and within tolerance. phew head cleaned & prepped Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge block deck Click image to enlarge Also dropped th oil today, not a bit of coolant to be seen in there! while i had it in bits, i decided to remove inter cooler aand associated pipes and separator for a good cleaning in paraffin.
Also drained coolant from rad and heater matrix and gave them a good flush! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge My 109 thread my youtube channel |

finally all back together after waiting for a few odd parts. nearly 3 weeks off the road ouch!
started after 4 turns AND i didn't charge batt while it was off so batt seems to be fine. can anyone help me understand the cooling system? rad, engine and H matrix were all emptied and flushed. followed rave on refill procedure. but what i want to know is this: is the engine running without ANY coolant until the stat kicks in to let water into engine? OR is it the other way round. when i fill the system coolant can naturally get into the engine jacket and the stat lets it out? im expecting the header to drop as ive only put 10 ltrs in and it takes 11, also havent had stat kick in yet cos the bloody thing doesnt want to get any hotter than 71 deg!!! (think stat opens at 77deg) it just feels wrong letting engine get so hot with no coolant in the block. thoughts??? My 109 thread my youtube channel |

if you didnt drain the block there may still be some old coolant in there hence feeling short by 1L
wpump circulates it around lump, when stat opens it allows greater flow through the rad. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
