Sorry guys not feeling too good so haven't gone for another test drive which I really wanted to do before saying too much.
Mal. Thanks v much...will hopefully have a quick look before heading to bed. M90. Not so much playing up just the usual intermittent injector knocking type noise that has plagued on / off. Mal, just had a look at the wiring manual and although I have no doubt that the middle multi connector on the ecm is for the controls I'm curious as to how you know? having had a look through I can see anything that suggest whether the controls plug into the top, bottom or middle (other than on the assumption of the top and bottom being smaller plugs and the middle one being the largest / most connectors which would therefore be the controls one?) |

Brian. Thanks so much. Just had a look through the connections to the middle plug which was the one of interest to me and the following are connected ;
Throttle pedal Abs Stop lamp Clutch switch Amongst others.......... Test drive tomorrow assuming I feel better than I do now...... |

Just FYI, I recently had a knocking noise that got worse when maintaining speed (i.e. gentle acceleration). Cleaning the whole system and using additive or 2SO didn't make things any better. So on the advice of member 1989964 and Pete Bell, I relearned the injector pilots and all is well again ) Apparently they get dirty, wear or just get out of sync. Now I know the knocking noise is coming from the fueling system and not the driveline, I will replace the pump valve too (again Pete's suggestion) and relearn the whole lot p.s. if you Google "pilot relearn" Ford's Tdci engine is in 3 of the top 4 results Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Many thanks all for all the useful information......
In this case relates to the problem I've been experiencing (or so it would seem). I've done 4 drive cycles now and no problems so although it's early days yet i'm confident the problem we found was in deed the long standing problem I've had. This was an actual problem and not just a 'it could be that let's replace it'. I think due to all my problems and you guys having to endure my rants, moans etc I feel it's only fair I provide a full account of my 'journey' for perfection....... make that resolve to find the illusive intermittent fault and get it to where it should have been when it left the factory. LR = It's gonna be a big write up with as much detail as I can recall. Thanks again. |

Will it be filmed in three parts, like Lord of the Rings? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Until I've upgraded my 64TB hard drive to fit it on in low resolution i'm not sure how many series it will be. Likely to be a little shorter than emmerdale though.

so here we are.....
probably no bafta's any probably won't interest many but if nothing else it will hopefully generate some amusing comments which all go to making this an incredibly interesting and informative site which deserves a very large So even before I picked def up I'd seen it in its pre pdi state so I commented on the poor panel fit around by the rear door area which was taken on board and resolved prior to me picking it up. So happy days collecting my new 110 with improved panel fit. 100 meters up the road and it kangaroo's.......probably nothing but mentioned it to LR.......probably just the finish / film on the clutch wearing off being new. OO...hmm. Anyway onwards and upwards....it only happend a couple more times. Some of the next items may not be in chronological order and I might have missed / have forgotten about some. So back to the work shop a further 2 or 3 times resolving leaks...all sorted now although the rear floor plate was fitted without a rubber seal. So like I say this is probably not in order but if we go through the body related stuff first.... So brackets for mid row seats all the paint fell off very early dayswhich was repainted / replaced and by month 6 there was little paint left on the front seat frames having fallen off in big sections with rust underneath.....all duly resolved. Front passenger door bent and as such replaced with new albeit with different door seals. Rust around bulkhead required sorting which again was done with little effort on my part. Rear door solenoid replaced no problem. Moaned about front door solenoid going the same way however was told it was fine and they struggle the first time after the door is shut as the first attempt is kind of bedding the door in fully?? 00. Few months later it had fully packed up so replaced. Windscreen wipers wouldn't turn off - fixed but dash not put back together properly so I had to sort. Early doors moaned about severe rattle – LR technician, service manager and workshop manager came out for a test drive and confirmed noises are characteristics of def and all ok.....turns out turbo heat shield bracket was loose with bolts missing and not aligned with turbo - they supplied the bolts and I fixed. Then ( and this is the interesting one) the ecu failed at approximately month 3...duly replaced and all good - well I was back on the road at least. Extention shaft from gearbox fails and is replaced followed a couple of weeks later by oil leaks from shaft seal. Replaced and same again and a 3rd time......by which time I feel they believe I'm taking the pi$$ and fabricating an oil leak as they told me there was no evidence of any oil missin....any how turns gearbox is 'porous' and needs to be replaced.......not sure how a gearbox becomes porous unless they've cracked the casing while working on it??? So replaced and all good.....well back to normal....... All along I'm moaning they aren't resolving the problems of knocking etc which 'seems' to improve' when cleaning sensors etc, or squinting wd40 on the clutch pedal????? So I replace the map sensor, maf sensor and fuel valve.....some seemed to make a difference but it never seemed to last. Twice the brakes seemed to come on of their own accord but never happened again? Had the occasional ‘zoom’ when pulling away in the morning only to fall away, I'd take my foot off the throttle and re-apply and all ok???? Rear prop replaced. Into year 4 and the turbo fails which was kindly replaced foc. During this time I started to call down to IRB who were the first to establish a possible problem when they saw a brief fluctuating voltage onto the clutch switch!!! I tried testing this time and time again but each time it was ok?? So was it a one off or not?? during my investigations however I noticed the turbo exercise the actuator it was suggested could have been the result of a comms loss (or words to that effect). After numerous visits down to IRB it seemed that the symptoms I was describing could be linked to the clutch switch - or the wiring to it (at last I felt like I was on to something and during this time it became obvious that IRB have a real in depth understanding of the engine calibration and how one sensor impacts on the characteristics of the engine – hugely interesting and the complexity of how it all gels together blow my mind (granted it might only be a little one)) Although I was at the point of throwing alot ofmoney on a new engine harness Ian at IRB seemed a little reluctant at first to go down this route as I still had no evidence to prove this would resolve the problem - In hindsight I should have asked Ian to work his magic to find the problem a long time back but that would have been money and time off the road (i'm tight and def is my everyday) and there was still no real evidence to prove there was indeed a problem (other than the driver). So before biting the bullet I was back on the cleaning connections crusade and asked Ian to show me how to remove the ecm to give that a clean up too.....good as gold Ian offered to this for me reminded me of the Robby Coltrane / Fairy liquid advert ): ). Anyhow a few minutes later and the ecm is being opened up to reveal 3 connections.....latched / locked in place - well 2 of them at least, the middle one the latch was kind of hanging off and clearly not locked in position - thanks LR, another top job! Ian fixed and at present it’s bloody great Rightly or wrongly I decided to get the ECM recalibrated - what a bargain. I had hoped it would improve mpg and the obvious performance increase, what I didn't realise was it would effectively be getting two calibrations for the price of one - def calibrated to give razor sharp response which didn't really suit my driving style and as such I was almost immediately planning to get it changed for something less responsive but within 24 hrs I’d been recalibrated too!!!! Pickup is without doubt improved (significantly) however more remarkably is the mpg....now I appreciate this is VERY subjective topic however I feel there is potential for at least a 10% increase in mpg and hence my 611 miles on one tank was after the recalibration, best before was about 560 (from memory). So in all happy happy days with a real big thanks to IRB for eventually finding my problem......and not once kicking me out of the workshop....I suspect this patience is what enables them to pay attention to detail and get things right rather than just bish bash like seems to be the order of the day for LR and some others. I’m not looking to start a ‘he’s better than them’ thread – there’s already too many for my liking and until someone goes out and buys a load of defs and get’s a load of jobs done on each by the different ‘specialists’ out there can anyone every say for sure who’s the best? I’m purely talking about my experiences / expectations and after having had the following jobs done I can say hand on heart my experiences have matched and exceeded expectation; Service Dinitrol Replacement turbo (disco 3) Injector learn / latest LR calibration Fuel valve replacement / Injector learn Turbo diagnostics Transferbox oil change IRB410 calibration one last but very important note which again reinforces how great this site is.......largely due to its members (sorry Martin - you're member too tho ) Lorryman100 very kindly offered to meet up with me while he was on his hols to have a look and give me his valued opinion on my def which 'unfortunately' at the time was working well and as such I was convinced was fixed, even so he very kindly gave / leant me a scangauge device to review various items while on the move. I've monitored ever since and offered to post it back to him but he's happy for me to pass this on to someone else who may find it useful to track down any potential problems they may have on the understanding they like myself pass it on to someone else on this forum. A very big thanks Lorryman100 aka Brian....or is that the other way round? and one last apology to you all for having to listen to my mad ramblings and moaning......I am now for sure thinner, bolder and greyer but I am also now the happiest I've been since owning my def and can comfortably say I have one of (there's always one that's better) the best standard looking 2010 defenders around with 43k miles. it now has an upgraded stereo with sub, usb outlet at the front with 12v outlet at the back (all looking OEM), a great dinitrol job, great calibration, newish mechanicals in terms of gearbox, turbo, rear prop, rear tow electrics, polish upon polish on the paint work (and exhaust), wipac crystals, new interior carpets, dynamat, sure not everyones taste but I am well and truly happy with def at the moment. hopefully my miss daisy driving style has helped in keeping the transmission feeling tight etc and hopefully my new found driving style which may deteriorate further as I'm seriously looking to upgrade to the IRB450 won't loosen anything up too much. if you're in the area I'd be very happy to show you round and take you for a wee drive to see if you agree - happy defendering everyone ! even done some off roading.. BUT (and it is a big one)........For how long?
I'd retain the OBD reader Caterham. For some strange reason by my reckoning I'd wager sooner or later you're going to wish you kept hold of it! Nevertheless I am genuinely both happy and relieved for you, now please enjoy it and stop fretting! Did you know your numberplate originated in Bournemouth by the way? think about it. my problem has always seemed to have related to an intermittent electrical problem (albeit there was a time I started to think it was the clutch but hindsight I'm sure it was always injector knock plus some other freak stuff).....and hey presto the loose electrical connect ties in perfectly. plus I've never given it 4k rpm so many times in one week - that in itself for me speaks volumes ! HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY DAYS The only thing to have gone wrong in the last few days is two rear teeth that have cracked and bits of teeth have fallen out trust you are both keeping well?..... and PS. why didn't someone tell me how great these defs are before. the years of carp gear changes etc etc that I've had to put up with |

Thank f.... for that. I gather a '650 or 700 Is Possible' thread is off the cards then? Great to see you've discovered your accelerator travels more than 10mm downwards. Now at last you may finally be able to see what exactly it can do from a performance and driveability perspective, and long may the silly grin you probably wear when getting behind the steering wheel now remain...........
**EDIT Numberplate.....Maybe but EL, RU and LJ were all Dorset designated.** If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
