Disco transfer box on TD5
Anyone know of any dramas about putting a disco transfer box on 53 plate td5 to increase the gear ratio? Will that mean that the ratio will run at 1.4? A Defender... Only thing to look out for is that not all td5 Disco's had a locking diff.

Google will turn up lots of info on it - and Ashcrofts web site will tell you which serial numbers are affected.

I may have a disco 300 tdi transfer box available if you decide to do it.

Disco t/box is 1.2:1 your current defender one should be 1.4

I've done it to mine. makes a lot of difference. if yor engine is in standard tune it might struggle when towing/hill starts/running bigger tyres, especially when pulling away, but once up to speed it's pretty good.

Did the same mod to my 52 plate 110 a few months ago, I bought my transfer box off eBay, then found that my original transfer box has two switches fitted to it 1 for the diff lock warning light and the other I assume is to tell the ecu that low range as been selected but the one I bought only had 1 switch fitted and that was a different size so in the end I had the internal bits fitted to my original case, so bear that in mind when you get your new transfer box

Best mod I've done on my Td5 90 by far.
Mine has got a bit more grunt than std but I'm sure you'll be fine towing and on hills etc. I know what diesel Jim is saying about towing and hill starts but then again first was pretty useless before anyway, it's much better now for me anyway, you soon get used to it.
I had to swap over my handbrake drum etc as the disco one was slightly deeper and wouldn't have fit, plus the speedo sensor is different but they're both dead easy to do, I can't remember about the switches etc but everything works as it should apart from the light on the dash doesn't come on when diff lock is engaged, but I'm sure I'd know if it was in diff lock anyway!!! Make sure you buy 2 new seals before fitting, they are only cheap and tend to get damaged when removing them, prob about £3 for both.
If you can find a decent one then just give it a go and keep yours with all the bits, then you can always go back again if you don't like it, but you will!

Absolutely standard ECU on my 90, 265/75 tyres and pulls a 1.222:1 transfer box beautifully.

You do have to swap over certain parts from the Defender box (speedo drive housing), and a Tdi box does not have the high/low switch boss on it in the front cover.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Is a Disco 2 TD5 tuned differently to a Defender TD5?

My Disco 2 is running a standard tune and 265/75 BFG Muds and the performance is fine; no issues with the combination of tyres and transfer box ratios.

I believe that the disco is 138 bhp as apposed to the defenders 122. Also the disco has smaller diameter tyres so very slightly lower final gearing than a defender would have. Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

BHP may be different, hence my question, but my Disco is on 265/75 Muds which are larger than a standard 90's..
